Seriously, you should take the time to talk to this person and come clean.
This is my dilemma. I think I should tell him. But, I have kids to feed and I am afraid of repercussions if it's found out I told him. :(( I have become the chickenshit I always used to hate.
Well, it is your call. If don't know the guy well enough to trust him then don't say anything. Don't get yourself in trouble. But maybe you can ask him if he is a aware what is going on. You should be able to give him a heads up without putting yourself at risk.

I don't think it accurately gets the verbal point across. Besides, my way is funnier.

I've been working to automate some tasks at my job. Now I realize my assignments will eliminate one guy's entire job. I know we will be eliminating a lot of jobs in next 2 months, he will be gone. I am supposed to keep this quiet, but I see this guy every day. :(

A computer programmers job is to reduce manpower required to perform tasks. (This is true in 99.9% of cases) I have eliminated a lot of people in my career. I suppose it could get to me but if I don't do it then I wouldn't have a job.

The only person I have eliminated was my high school english teacher, she was forcibly retired following my graduation. I raised enough of a fuss to make sure of that. I have eliminated positions, but never the people, they got utilized elsewhere. perhaps because the two companies I have worked for have always been overworked, we just shift around as I add efficiency.

Using humour is often an effective way to reduce the stress of performing unpleasant tasks: "Knock, knock..." "Who's there?" "Not you anymore."

I worked at a place where I realised I could eliminate 2 or 3 jobs (from a 4 man team) with a day's worth of coding. In the end my manager said 'leave enough manual steps to give them something to do'. I left soon after.

Was that before or after you realized that your job had been reduced in scope to a few manual steps? ;P

Harsh. If it was me I'd be thinking about looking for a new job myself.
I am. Everybody here is.
Then all this could become a self-fulfilling prophesy - that's the problem! If the company has been honest about the reductions, they should be aware that the reductions will be higher due to panic job-searching. I know I have worked for a company that "downsized" by a handful which resulted in almost half the company leaving over the next few months - then lack of staff led to higher workloads, led to dissatisfied staff, led to resignations, etc. etc. until they had to have a massive recruitment drive to get people on board. Luckily for me I was head-hunted right in the middle of it all!
