I want a small, ultra-light-weight music device. I do not want an over-priced brick aimed more at pleasing phone companies rather than those who actually need to use it.

I have an iPod Shuffle. Real small, clips on wherever you want, plays in order or picks songs at random. Good Luck

Well I have a Creative Zen Vision:M I'm very happy with, which has a radio and supports WMA. No wifi though. I know it isn't the 'super portable' thing you're after, but perhaps the Zen Micros might fill your needs?

I never thought I'd say this but I'm thinking of getting a Zune. My old (well, one-day-past-warranty) iPod nano has become so unstable that it's barely usable. I was thinking of getting another then realised the Zune has - Wifi - A radio - support for WMA - a lower price tag - longer battery life Anyone had experience (and comments) with both?

I had both Ipod and Zune, Zune is simple and great(get the 80 gb one), but IPod Touch is just awesome(but pricey).

I have an iPod that I never use, and some of my coworkers have Zunes they never use. Both are serving the purpose just fine.

I had one I received as a gift, was out of waranty and had a bustesd screen. Took it to Apple and they replaced it on the spot free of charge. The radio in the Zune is pretty attractive though

I have two Zunes, the original 30 and another 4 gig. They are both great. The wifi on the Zune though is limited only to other Zunes. It is not really true wifi at all.

I've never had any issues with my ipod, I have however had major issues with itunes. 75% of the music that is loaded in just started playing back all distorted when I downloaded their lastest update.

If the Zune comes with an on/off switch, I'll buy one. I like my iPod Nano, but one thing drives me absolutely bug-shit with it. The little bastard won't power off consistently when you press and hold the 'play' spot on the wheel. If it does power off, it powers itself back on. Other than that, it's a very nice little player.

I like the Creative MuVo better. http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=215&product=17474[^] thankfully, the 4 gig one comes only in black. it's a little larger than a usb stick, can be used as one, doesn't need that FRACKIN quicktime software of doom and has a radio. It also plays .WAV files if you're into pure quality at the expense of #songs. I got my son one for his birthday and the thing is cool. a usb stick with earphones, basically. The drawback? no clip. Oh yeah, no need for those flippin' cables, too. ...Steve http://shazware.com

I am having an (old) 4G ipod for about three or four years now (I really don't count the time...). And I'm loving it! Though I am using linux I don't have to deal with Itunes. Instead I use the build-in sync in Amaroc and it works just fine! Some time after the warranty was over the harddisk (20G) crashed... (falls from your desk aren't good for HDDs, man...) I just bought a new one and changed it. => new firmware on it and everything was fine. Another thing I like is the iPodLinux. Gives you the chance of really modding your ipod. I read about keyboards plugged in at the small connector for remote controls etc. Myself I had the wikipedia run on it for a while (I had some need for it at school ;-)) I cannot compare to the Zune, but my iPod was a really good friend on my way through these (musik-filled) years :-) greets, Christoph

The Zune did all its own digging at first, it could have been produced by Nazi Inc. and it would have received as much bad press. It didn't help Microsoft tried to be cool with the marketing and depict acid dropping bunnies. It also came in brown. The latest Zune is pretty good though.

I don't use either, but my kids do, and I can tell you this much. One of them had an iPod and one had a Zune. The Zune kid was always mad because the iPod kid was constantly stealing the Zune. Problem now solved because the iPod kid saved up enough to buy a Zune.

I've never used a Zune... I have an iPod nano (2GB from, whoah, 3 years ago?) and like it, but I've heard good things about the UI of the Zune. My biggest question about the Zune would be its syncing software. iTunes gets the job done with iPods, although it certainly has issues. I'd rip my own fingernails out if I had to use Media Player to do it though... MP seems to do everything to 90% satisfaction, and getting that final 10% is enough to drive you insane. (Ripping, burning, library management... it's all JUST annoying enough to make me not use it.) My iPod recently just decided to mark its entire library as "used space" but I couldn't play any music. I was able to reset it and reload it though. I'm hoping it doesn't get increasingly unstable, I think I've been lucky so far. ("But hey, I thought Apple products never suffered from mysterious debilitating bugs!")

Nice thing about the Microsoft stuff is that it is all SDKed to hell (as usual), so if iTunes or WMP annoys you move to Winamp or roll your own... I recently got a gift IPod Touch literally LOCKS me into iTunes I am very annoyed and have decided that Apple are a load of idiots. I hate iTunes: it doesn't have half the format support of Winamp (in fact I find there is little else that does) and considering that 90% of my music is in OGG I can't get it onto the iPod.

Have had a zune for about 6 months now. Use it pretty much every day. Seamless integration with SYNC (I have an 08 ford focus). Software to interface with it is not the best but it gets the job done. I wish they would release an api so we could write our own library management for the thing. Music sound quality is excellent although there is no real graphic equalizer. I was worried about that at first but the sound quality has been so good that I didn't really need it. I have the 8 GB version that was released late last year. Also my entire library is in wma format so that may be an important factor to consider. My wife has a similar ipod (Had to get that because it was available in pink!) and she hates it compared to the zune

I love my Mac, but iPods are overpriced and rubbish. They are just too fragile, and too expensive. Personally, I love my Zen - it's small, it recharges, it was cheap, and 4GB is more that enough music for me to carry ( they don't make the player that can hold all my CDs, so that's just off the cards anyhow ). And, when it cost < $100, I don't have to worry about it, I just use it.

I think the Zen is awesome. No pricey name tag!
