What do people here like to do when they are away from work? I like working with my hands, enjoying gadgetry, and traveling.

I like reading books, watch documentaries, PC-games, chess, browse through "code project"

That's really cool. Mostly had been HO scale, been thinking about O scale now, and maybe G scale in the yard. My dad-in-law is a part of the Northeast Ohio Steamers and the 1-inch gauge they use looks really cool. Only if I had more yard :-\

I have an N scale, which I got for my 9th or 10th birthday. I'll probably have to clean the engines up to get them going again. I have around 20 meters of rails, I think, but some are broken (I was PLAYING with it as a kid), so I'll probably get around 10 meters. Well, I am actually thinking about selling it. But I'll have to repair the engines first, I guess.

I play also guitar - electric and classical, have children (3 daughters) and do kungfu. There is a lot beside programming :-) @Christian: This is for sure the best orientation for e-guitar. What are your favorite guitar players? cheers Hiro

Scottish Country Dancing: demonstrating it at festivals has taken me from home in England ;) to Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, The Czech Republic and even Mongolia! It's great for exercising the mind (learning the formations) as well as the body and is great FUN! See: this[^]

After work I'm riding my motorbike, playing beachvolleyball with friends (in summer only ;)) or just sitting around in pubs trying to solve the problems of the world with the help of some pints of ale :-D Many years ago a played E-guitar in a heavy metal band, but we were not very successful. Currently I'm planning a 3-week-travel through south-east-europe via motorbike. Maybe I will arrive Bulgaria at the Black Sea

Playing games, soccer (when I manage to form a team), some coding, documentaries, internet, listening music (few years ago I used to play too), occasional hiking... I think that's it.

About 75-98% of all programmers I know, spend their free time with more work or something, that keeps fingers busy: Console games(Wii/PS/Arcade), Instruments(Guitar/flute), Gadgets(fixing stuff, creating stuff). The reason for that: It's a good practice for fingers and usually pleasant for others. Myself: (GameCube/PS2/PC) Gaming, Playing Guitar, Photo and 3D Rendering.. but usually - solving other people problems with IT (additional money income ;) ). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't see much difference between piano player and programmer: they both requires precision and speed of fingers. Oh.. yea.. one difference: programmer can listen to different music, while piano player, only to what he plays himself.

As a kid, my dad and I were really into model railroading, and I have been trying to get back into it. I have toyed with the idea of having computer control signals, etc, and really geek it out :-\

Rock climbing is my main passion at the moment. I rediscovered it after a 15 year break and can't keep myself away from it now. I juggle a bit although not as much as I used to due to the club I used to go to closing. Getting outdoors is the big thing though. I can't stand being stuck indoors for more minutes than I have to. I'll run, play tennis, cycle etc any excuse for fresh air. Russell

What do people here like to do when they are away from work? I like working with my hands, enjoying gadgetry, and traveling.

Woodworking - I like the tactile nature of it as a counterpoint to the abstract nature of programming. Especially turning, which has a very Zen like feel when you're watching the waste spiral off in a simultaneous act of creation and destruction. I also like spending time with my 4 kids (3 girls and 1 boy all 5 and under). I play board/strategy games (Race for the Galaxy, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, Cutthroat Caverns, Roborally, etc), RPGs, and every once in a while a racing game on a PS2 or PC.
