What do people here like to do when they are away from work? I like working with my hands, enjoying gadgetry, and traveling.

I crochet, work on my MBA, various crafts, avoid housework, veggie gardening, lawn mowing, sell crafts and consulting on Etsy.com, blog for cash, watch Sci-Fi, swim, camp, and home improvement. After this last round of renovations my assignment is to build a music server for the house with speakers in each room and an arcade machine. I think I want to do a 2 in 1. I try my best not to touch a computer on off-hours though some of my activities require it. There's a laptop permanently perched on the arm of the couch for that reason. I also keep a small bedroom crammed with craft supplies, old computer parts, my desktop computer, books and toys. The toys are mine - my kids are 4-legged and furry - 2 dogs outside and 1 inside cat. When I work on computers for friends I thank my lucky starts I'm not a proctologist! ;P

Woodworking - I like the tactile nature of it as a counterpoint to the abstract nature of programming. Especially turning, which has a very Zen like feel when you're watching the waste spiral off in a simultaneous act of creation and destruction. I also like spending time with my 4 kids (3 girls and 1 boy all 5 and under). I play board/strategy games (Race for the Galaxy, Puerto Rico, Power Grid, Cutthroat Caverns, Roborally, etc), RPGs, and every once in a while a racing game on a PS2 or PC.

Finally! Someone mentioned it! Did I just miss the giant subthread where everybody says "Yeah, that's what actually eats up 90% of the time that I'm not coding (the remaining 10% being taken up by sleeping, eating, and pooping)"?

I pretend I still do all the things I used to do but no longer seem to get around to actually doing anymore. Examples: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic. Knitting, crocheting, drawing, practicing flute, martial arts flavor of the year, cooking, hiking, swimming, standing on my head, creating portals to alternate dimensions using duct tape and a pocket knife. In reality, I watch TV, movies, and YouTube; and play video games (currently Puzzle Pirates) and RPGs with my friends. As of this week, I can no longer put Dr. Who on my list, so maybe I should cross TV off as well. Would you believe I have talking to girls on my list? Yeah, me neither.

I play with my cars (WRX & Neon SRT-4), which includes driving and working on them. I play 360/PS3/Wii and have started the free game Mabinogi. But probably what I do the most is watch anime.

I have an N scale, which I got for my 9th or 10th birthday. I'll probably have to clean the engines up to get them going again. I have around 20 meters of rails, I think, but some are broken (I was PLAYING with it as a kid), so I'll probably get around 10 meters. Well, I am actually thinking about selling it. But I'll have to repair the engines first, I guess.

I've done some N scale about 10 years ago. The layout was okay, but my soldering job was sub-par and the tracks kept snapping on the curves and you can imagine the multitude of derailments that happened

I'm also a guitarist / bassist - I play a bit of everything, but most into prog (Yes, Dream Theater, Rush, Neal Morse/Spocks Beard, Glass Hammer, etc...) I was totally bummed when Yes had to cancel their tour this year! I also spend hours reading (mostly sci-fi and fantasy), and generally spending time with family - which mostly means my wife now: of 2 daughters (both over 18), one has moved out and the other is seldom around...

 When I mean totally geeking out a model train layout, I am talking about having a dispatcher's console where I can control the signals ( red, green, yellow, etc ), control switches, and more. I've seen it done and having a friend who is a dual degreed electrical engineer, he could help out...

I wish - John M. blows my doors off. Then again he practices more hours per day than I put in in front of the screen... I'm still working on LTE's 'When the Water Breaks' - Tony Levin blows me away, too; but for some reason I seem to be able to work my way through his stuff a bit easier. Maybe it's just that John has those 12 inch fingers, while mine are more like 1/2 inch (darn it - there's no smiley for jealous as all get-out :-D )

I enjoy Tool, but haven't learned any of their songs... for some reason, when it comes to the more dark music, I seem to like electronica better: Gary Numan, Depeche Mode's 'A Broken Frame' (the only album of theirs I like), Daft Punk, etc... although I still like Siouxie and Xmal - I guess I'm just a weird musical ecclectic iconoclast - the only stuff I really dislike is the stuff that gets radio play - the musical version of oatmeal (without cinnamon or sugar) - you know, SoftRock, most Country, and most HipHop! On a different note, I really wasn't exagerating by that much on the length of my fingers - my longest finger is less than 2 1/2 inches! I have a good sense of style, but blazing speed will never be me...
