    She's hung up on this whole 'civility' thing. Even the perception of being rude unacceptable. But I'm working on that. :)

    hehe. To be honest, I'm very civil on the phone. I'm getting better at interrupting a motor-mouth and saying "Sorry for interrupting but I am really not interested." but it can still be hard at times. I'd see if your wife's civility can be used towards "no calls during dinner time." Take it off the hook. Civility towards your own family first.

      I had one of these the other day, telling me that the factory warranty on my car was about to expire. Well, I just bought a "new" car (2001 VW), so I was curious about it's supposed warranty. I pressed "1" to speak to a representative, basically to ask them what car they were referring to and then to tell them "politely" to please never call me again. Well, I pressed "1" and after 30 seconds of silence I was disconnected. Not to be dissuaded, I called them back on the number that they had called me from, and got the unavailable message from the phone company. I'm curious as to how exactly this is a scam? These people are obviously too stupid to scam anyone, since it is impossible to actually get in contact with them. Oh well, I guess I'll get back to sending out name corrections in reply to all these emails that have me confused with someone else...

      They phone en masse. Your one disconnection means nothing to them. Maybe only 0.1% of people respond favourably but, just like email spam, that is all they need to keep on going.

        Amazing how things have changed. It has only been a few short years since I was a kid but back then everyone knew when dinner was and everyone had it at the same time. Between half 6 and half 7 you didn't call, you didn't knock on doors, you didn't swing by for a visit unless invited, sports had finished, playtime was over, movies were on later and broadcasters never scheduled anything important at that time. These days dinner is whenever you can get something in the microwave between the demands of the TiVo/web/email/mobile/sports/movies/work... a shame.

        Basically the same story here. The phone never rang during dinner when I was a kid. These days the whole family is at the dinner table and we don't answer the phone when it rings. We have voice mail, that's its job. I may be crazy or behind the times but I place great importance on having dinner together as a family. Times may change but standards must remain.

          In the US, does an unlisted number show 'unlisted', or is that not allowed ? At home, they are unlisted, from call centres.

          well, I got a caller ID with all 10 numbers at "0" and an"Unidentified caller".... duh! isn't that obfuscation to the extreme.

            Great sentiment. I used to be much more civil on the phone but we are bombarded with sales calls upwards of 20 a day, even though we are on the 'Do not call list', something in America where you sign up for it and telemarkers are not allowed to call you (for a certain period of time)...yeah right.

                Ah, I have my very talkative 5 year old son pick up the phone and chat with the nice salespeople. Usually it ends with him making some type of gaseous noise and laughing uncontrollably. For some reason I find it just as funny as he does. The wife however, just doesn't get the (three stooges-like) humorous quality of it though. :-D :sigh:

                    There should be a law that prohibits the obfuscation, spoofing, or otherwise transmitting anything other than the actual phone number you're calling from. I just got a call from the number 123-456-7890. The funny thing is I knew exactly who it was - an automotive warranty service that has been widely identified as a scam.

                    Have a real live police whistle hanging by your phone. If one of 'em gets through - or you have had a bad day and just feel like it - hold the whistle to the mouthpiece and blow it as loud and long as possible.

                      On some phone systems, pressing a number (1 or 9?) allows them to make long distance phone calls on your number. They don't need to talk to you afterwards. I get them all the time claiming to be a credit card company with problems on my card. :laugh:

                        Here in the US the person receiving calls can block calls that won't show the number but it doesn't work very well. Businesses can still call in ,the id shows 'no data'. To stop pesky telemarketers we have the Do Not Call list we can sign up for, but it doesn't work really good either.

                          We get the same calls on our home number. I wish I knew which car they're calling about since we've got cars from model years 2000, 1992, and 1970. Which warranty is about to expire...? :~

                            I guess I should start answering those calls then. If it's not too late, that is. The messages always say it's my last chance. Yet they keep calling. Go figure.

                              Before they changed their number to 123-456-7890, it was 702-... a number in Las Vegas. I looked that phone number up on google and sure enough, there are other people complaining about it. BTW, it seems you've wasted your time pressing 1, because they'll just keep calling. Other people are complaining about that too.

                                      We need flexibility in end-user phone filtering like we do for spam filtering. Not in my predefined contact list? Then don't even allow it to ring... I wish I had that sort of control over the hardware--I'd be more than willing to write the software.
