Restore the data from the periodic backups you create.

By any chance was the ghost image you used two years old? Ghost completely overwrites your HD with the image file it's provided. Any old data on the drive it overwritten in the process.

The only way you might salvage this is to pay a data recovery center, but they are very expensive (but only if they can recover the data). Hopefully you've learned a valuable lesson about backups, I had to learn it the same way years ago when I lost a lot more than 2 years worth of work - never again! Backup, Backup and Backup once more. I now keep 4 seperate backups (I use SyncBack to backup) and am hopefully covered for most problems that might occur. regards, Darka

And as I realized this week, make sure any automated backups are running! I changed the system account password but forgot to update the scheduler. No sync for over a month. ooops.

Me too, damn fine product for free. 2 drives mirrored every 24 hrs and one I keep in a draw at work which I sync periodically. So far, so good.

If you've overwritten the data with ghost, there isn't a lot you can do. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_recovery#Recovering_overwritten_data[^] If you've just deleted the data. Stop using your computer right now! Which ever hard drive had the data that you've lost on it, turn the computer off immediately and disconnect the hard drive! There are possible recovery techniques, but the more the data is messed with the less likely recovery becomes. (Windows is constantly writing to empty blocks on the hard drive, so the longer you leave it running, the higher the chance that you deleted data will be overwritten. testdisk[^] can be used to analyse disks and restore deleted data. Connect the hard drive as a _secondary_ drive on a PC. and use testdisk to analyse it.

There may be programs that can recover files that were in locations of hte drive merely marked as 'empty' but not actively overwritten. I can't name any though.

:-) I liked it so much I upgraded to the paid version for the extra functionality, which was pretty cheap anyway.

Ever since I had a laptop stop working because it was overheating and I lost a lot of work I keep multiple back ups. Usually on a flash drive, CD/DVD, external hard drive, computer and on my laptop. Seems to be the case that once someone looses something they realise the importance of backing up.

:-) I liked it so much I upgraded to the paid version for the extra functionality, which was pretty cheap anyway.

Using the best Darth Vader imitation I can muster: "I find your lack of attention to detail disturbing..." Just chalk this one up to a dumbshit move and get on with your life. Your data is gone.
