My girlfriends birthday is coming up in less than a month. I can think of several places that would make for a great dinner (thank you minneapolis) however i'm completely clueless about what else to do. I want to make it amazing... (i'm competing with her b-day from 2 years ago where she went hang-gliding in New Zealand) any ideas on once in a lifetime opportunites that she'll remember forever? :)

Yeah but Steven just fell short of virgin galactic, so my offerings should be easily within his budget, while a soyuez flight would be far beyond it. Also IIRC the ticket's $20m+, for just the flight and room, Nasa's planning to bill the next person going $350k for email. :wtf:

Ah, so you're actually competing against an old BF...wow! First suggestion is stop competing and just be yourself. Do something from the heart. Cook her a really nice meal, nothing extravagant, just something really nice. Or maybe a trip to New York to see a Broadway show or something. Greatest thing I ever got my wife was a day at the Spa (already mentioned). Let them pamper her all day, and follow that up with a nice home cooked meal... There's a good reason he's an EX, and if she's with you because of who YOU are, then just be YOU.

Good points there. Obviously something didn't go right with the ex, or the guy wouldn't be an ex.

If you have to "compete" with a previous birthday....then maybe you should consider a different gf. And along those lines...you want REALLY memorable? break up with her. She'll remember that forever. Seriously, rent/buy her favorite movie and take her out to a nice dinner. Follow that up back at your/her place with a night thats all about her. do whatever she wants. Just think ahead and make sure you have prepared some of the things that she might request which aren't usually possible spontaneously. That's the stuff that will really impress her.

Well you could charter a Sea Plane to take you and her to a remote lake 100's of miles from no where and spend the weekend camping and picnicking in quiet serenity. Of course Murphy's law would suggest that should you do this, some other moron will have the exact same idea and make his camp immediately adjacent to yours.

Someone has suggested this, make the day all about her. My mother in law always tells the story of the greatest gift she ever received from my father-in-law. He cleaned the house. She appreciated the fact that he put so much effort into it just for her to be able to relax a little. There is truth to the adage, "It's the thought that counts"

It would be nice, but there's a huge difference in the energy budget (cost of fuel, and needed heat shielding) between orbital and suborbital flight.

Well admittedly there is that niggardly problem of the delta v from SpaceShipOne's 2.1k mph to orbital 17.5k mph. Plus it would then have to carry all that propellant, and it's mother ship would have to carry it. I suppose some left over for a retro burn would nice too. And well, yes, you might want at least 2 hours of life support. And I suppose - and I think you're being very picky here - some kind of heat shielding might be nice. Although multiple skips off the atmosphere would reduce the work, and be a fun ride in the process.

Not really. It turned out to be an SFnal idea that failed the application of engineering calculations test. The problem is that you're only killing rotational (forward) kinetic energy but your radial (up/down) KE remains constant. That results in each skip being at a steeper angle and generating more reentry heat. Brute force heat shielding like used on the shuttle and Soyuz capsules turned out to be less massive. :doh:

Some have already said this, but be creative and make it personal. One of our first years when dating hubby got me an armoire for my jewelry. I had never asked for it or even looked at one, but it was a great gift. I always say cleaning the house is a great and very inexpensive gift. In mid-September Mike Birbiglia, one of my fave comics is playing in Mpls. Hubby and I might go. Since her bday is in September you could always get a nice sapphire piece of jewelry. (I recommend gemstv dot com for cheaper but really nice jewelry.) There is even pink saphhire so if she doesn't like blue. A nice terry cloth robe and a day and the spa is always nice, too.

Dude..tsk tsk..[shakes head]. You aren't following the plan at all are you? :) You're supposed to keep an eye open all year to see what she likes, dislikes and intercept the no doubt 1000 or more hints she's dropped already. At this point you're screwed, think of something simple and "togethery" and go for that. Anything grandiose will more than likely backfire in your face at this point.
