I have my Google settings setup to search UseNet before the web. It's been setup that way for 10 years, on the rare occurrence I have to ask a question on Usenet I usually get an informed response in about a day or so (not including sarcastic abusive drivel). However, if you use your real email address and industrial strength spam filter is required. I have an email address I use just for UseNet. By the way, there are other forums on UseNet then alt.sex.puppydogs (what I gathered the author was referring to), and a great deal of technology specific information. However, more and more organizations are blocking port 110, declaring it to risky to open, but UseNet can be accessed through Google groups.

I was actually thinking of the olde BBS's, where you dialled straight into their modem, not the almost non-existent internet.

Perhaps it would be better stated, that my search engine of choice has been setup that way. :-O

Usenet has been shut down (happened a week or two ago).
