Take it from me, extremely awesome, totally fun, but takes a lot of your time. And its true, whatever Master Pete O'Hanlon tells you is just pearls. He fought in both the clone wars and the .NET insurrection.

haha, yeah! Have you ever had a look at JP's rock discipline? An absolute gem! He covers everything from arpeggios to playing legato(spelling?), gives examples and tells you how to progress that specific skill... Its helped me alot, even just learning how to improve speed and accuracy with a metronome took me that step above the amateurs :)

JP is an amazing technical player. If you like him and you like Yngwie give Vinnie Moore a listen. He's a huge technician, and he can play just about any style.

They're all great but I still like Myung's technique more although some of his songs are a bit diffucult to play if you don't have 15 inch fingers.

I suppose I prefer these guys because they play bass more like a guitarist. So much so for Sheehan that Talas didn't have a guitarist and it still sounded as though they did.

Oh, I wasn't trying to deter you from going solo eventually, far from it! Its the single best thing I've done, it just takes a lot of time thus keeping me from my wife and 5 month old, not to mention CP article writing :)

Ive been watching the G3 concert again and he is simply a legend! Loving Mr.Vai and Mr.Satriani aswell but i prefer Mr.Petrucci :) Im busy saving for a 7 string guitar so i can learn more of his music and progress my skills even further... If I didn't become a code jockey I'd probably be a professional musician! Any other Petrucci fans here? CG, you've got to be one?

Never heard of him but Vai and Satriani are legendary. I also have always believed that Frank Zappa was *hugely* underrated as a guitar player; he should be right up there in the pantheon of legends.

give him a listen then (Dream Theater), if you like Vai and Satriani youd love petrucci, his styles a tad different but totaly awsum. A very technical guitarist as Pete suggested. Are you a guitarist?

How could I forget? You should also check out George Lynch - he was the guitarist with Dokken. Mr Scary is one of the hardest pieces I ever had to get my fingers round.

Awsum knowing im not the only person with taste in music! The weird thing is I didnt like them at all when a friend introduced me! But then i started playing guitar, and the day i saw a live performance of theirs on DvD i was hooked! I have yet to meet someone who likes them that isnt a musician... It must be cause you got to develop a taste for that kind of music and the only way to do that is be reasonably good at playing an instrument... I must admit that coding to a dream theater track is the best ever!

I absolutely suck at playing guitar, so i wouldn't call myself a musician. More like a guy who owns a guitar. I like DT, Satch, Vai, etc. It's just impressive to hear/watch someone who excels at what they do.

Playing guitar is just a case of practicing. I admit that I'll never be as good as Vai or Satriani, but I'm just happy with what I do and the level I've achieved. Learn some of the songs and licks that you like (there are plenty of resources online) and you'll soon move onto another level with your playing.

I usually noodle around for a week and then something else gets my attention for a month or so. I actually feel like I'd be decent if I set aside some time every week to play, but I haven't made the effort as yet.

Try to set aside half an hour every night and you'll soon see an improvement. I find that writing a new song once a fortnight or so helps to keep the focus.

Do you commit those new songs to music manuscript ?

give him a listen then (Dream Theater), if you like Vai and Satriani youd love petrucci, his styles a tad different but totaly awsum. A very technical guitarist as Pete suggested. Are you a guitarist?

:) Sitting right behind me is a beautiful Simon and Patrick hand-made cedar acoustic that hasn't been played in about two years. I used to play a lot and slacked right off for some reason the last couple of years but this winter I think I'll take it up again.

JP is class (I'm a long term DT fan), but I much prefer Vai. Mind you, I spent a long time in the mid 80s learning his stuff. I was at the Satch concert a couple of months ago where he was supported by Paul Gilbert. Satch was awesome, but Gilbert was technically on another planet. Still, Satch had much more feel to his playing.

I think this is where I can't get into Malmsteen. He's technically a very good player, possibly better than Satriani - but there's no feel to it, no emotion. A Satch track generally doesn't need vocals (which is a good thing, because he's not a great singer) because the guitar plays such an emotional part. In fact the backing tracks for most of his output are incredibly simple - commonly not even three chords. Having said he's not a great singer, one of my favourite Satch songs is 'I Believe' from 'Flying In A Blue Dream'. Both guitar and vocal make great contributions to that. Unfortunately later CDs have been infected with LOUDNESS - I love 'Chords of Life' ('Strange Beautiful Music') but it doesn't compress well, for listening without the CD, due to the clipping. It always amazes me how he can take one of his studio creations - typically with multitracking, tape loops, reversed sections, etc - and be able to distil it to something he can play live. 'Time Machine' disc 2 is an incredible set of live performances - 'Summer Song' is a standout for me.
