every. single. time. i get a Windows update, my Vista machine loses track of the dual monitor setup. sometimes i can fix it with Windows monitor setup. sometimes i have to use the ATI setup app. sometimes i have to do a complete re-install of the ATI driver.
yeah, it resets the screensaver, too. It still shows as set and enabled, I just have to go back in and click apply again. Wierd.

At least Vista is reliable then. :rolleyes: My XP laptop loses track randomly; sometimes i can undock/redock/reboot without problems, sometimes it'll forget the refresh rate, sometimes it'll move all windows to the wrong desktop, sometimes it just re-arranges the logical coordinates of each screen. It's the equivalent of keeping a window open next to a desk full of papers - stability changes with the wind. :sigh:

...installing Ubuntu 8.04 (I refuse to use their stupid animal names to refer to their distros)... 0) It didn't appear to have installed the required alsa driver to allow my sound card to work. This is almost understandable since it's a Creative Audigy - quite possibly the most widely used brand/model on the freakin' planet. [sarcasm]There's no reason it should automatically know how to make it work.[/sarcasm] 1) It sees that I have dual monitors, but it's in "clone" mode and seems to think my 19-inch monitor is the primary one, despite the fact that my 22-inch monitor is plugged into the 1st monitor port on my video card (and is where the POST display is shown during boot-up. 2) It insists my 22-inch monitor is only capable of 1280x1024. These are the things that make me hate linux - the fact that I have to dick around with the system for a couple of hours before it works like it should have when I installed it. I guess this is to be expected since most of the "programmers" are busy trying to port the kernel to a glass of water.

Creative don't do a Linux drive and won't release the interface specifications so ALSA can write one, everything has to be reverse engineered the hard way :mad: Install the restricted driver for your card, the dual monitor set up is in there (I do this with nVidia).

It used to work with the alsa driver... It hasn't worked since 7.0. I installed the restricted drivers for the video card, and it botched up the X display.

YEs, but the stupid linux drivers either don't always pick it up, or don't consistently work. Why I have no idea, but I remember that with both the Ubuntu 6.x and 7.x series the sound would sometimes not work, or work for a while, and then just quit, and nothing I did seemed to make any lasting difference. But hooray! Linux runs on a my iPod! Sigh...

Sure it has problems, nothing is perfect. But installing a driver? changing display settings? you need to do the same thing on windows too! What about the fact that Ubuntu is faster than vista and xp? do you hate that?

I think Windows is not to blame here. It's the ATI drivers that are completely crap. I've always had problems with ATI and dual monitor setup - Windows AND Linux.

As a Windows developer of 10 years, I completely disagree, Ubuntu is amazing!! Sure it has problems, nothing is perfect. But installing a driver? changing display settings? you need to do the same thing on windows too! What about the fact that Ubuntu is faster than vista and xp? do you hate that?

How do you measure that? :~ In terms of GUI snappiness, I find that Windows blows KDE/Gnome right out of the water. I am a living GUI seismograph... ;)

Yeah, but it takes a few minutes to install the driver update your resolution, and make a few changes to support your dual monitor setup. Ohyeah, did I mention there's no need to do this through the command prompt?

"...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001try disabling the sound outputs on the motherboard - and try selecting "alsa" on the "sound" settings (the one from the administration menu) They've changed their default to "pulse audio" in 8.04 and that didn't work for me either - changing back to "alsa" helped.
All the label says is that this stuff contains chemicals "... known to the State of California to cause cancer in rats and low-income test subjects."
