[sarcasm]There's no reason it should automatically know how to make it work.[/sarcasm] 1) It sees that I have dual monitors, but it's in "clone" mode and seems to think my 19-inch monitor is the primary one, despite the fact that my 22-inch monitor is plugged into the 1st monitor port on my video card (and is where the POST display is shown during boot-up. 2) It insists my 22-inch monitor is only capable of 1280x1024. These are the things that make me hate linux - the fact that I have to dick around with the system for a couple of hours before it works like it should have when I installed it. I guess this is to be expected since most of the "programmers" are busy trying to port the kernel to a glass of water.

It used to work with the alsa driver... It hasn't worked since 7.0. I installed the restricted drivers for the video card, and it botched up the X display.

YEs, but the stupid linux drivers either don't always pick it up, or don't consistently work. Why I have no idea, but I remember that with both the Ubuntu 6.x and 7.x series the sound would sometimes not work, or work for a while, and then just quit, and nothing I did seemed to make any lasting difference. But hooray! Linux runs on a my iPod! Sigh...

Sure it has problems, nothing is perfect. But installing a driver? changing display settings? you need to do the same thing on windows too! What about the fact that Ubuntu is faster than vista and xp? do you hate that?

every. single. time. i get a Windows update, my Vista machine loses track of the dual monitor setup. sometimes i can fix it with Windows monitor setup. sometimes i have to use the ATI setup app. sometimes i have to do a complete re-install of the ATI driver.
I think Windows is not to blame here. It's the ATI drivers that are completely crap. I've always had problems with ATI and dual monitor setup - Windows AND Linux.

As a Windows developer of 10 years, I completely disagree, Ubuntu is amazing!! Sure it has problems, nothing is perfect. But installing a driver? changing display settings? you need to do the same thing on windows too! What about the fact that Ubuntu is faster than vista and xp? do you hate that?

How do you measure that? :~ In terms of GUI snappiness, I find that Windows blows KDE/Gnome right out of the water. I am a living GUI seismograph... ;)

Yeah, but it takes a few minutes to install the driver update your resolution, and make a few changes to support your dual monitor setup. Ohyeah, did I mention there's no need to do this through the command prompt?

All the label says is that this stuff contains chemicals "... known to the State of California to cause cancer in rats and low-income test subjects."

My peeve with Windows Update: On my XP machine at home, I use Outlook Express for e-mail. I don't have Outlook installed, but I do have the rest of Office 2003. After every single damn Windows Update, the first time I run Outlook Express, it says it's no longer my default e-mail client :wtf:. I don't have any other e-mail client on the damn machine. How can it not be the default?

Although I do not use ubuntu, I have never had a single problem with the motherboard drivers and this is on dozens of linux machines. In most cases the driver is snd_intel8x0 (even on AMD boards) because most motherboards have AC97 sound. A second advantage of using AC97 is this driver is in the kernel so it in most cases will be enabled. To check if you have it enabled in the kernel
# zgrep SND_INTEL /proc/config.gz
or just
# zgrep SND /proc/config.gz
To see all sound drivers that are in the kernel. If you see "is not set" then the driver is not enabled. If you see CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0=m that means the driver is a loadable module with modprobe otherwise it is part of the kernel. It could be that your problem is with pulseaudio though. I have heard that enabling this will cause some problems with some applications. Wine is one of these applications.

For me the motherboard sound (AC97) I have not had a single problem with it on dozens of computers. See my previous post for more info.
