True, but I am not convinced I would like that whole "errant missile chasing me" thing... ;)

I spend many nights this summer in the basement because of tornado warnings so I feel your pain. We lose our power every time there is a major storm. Since last time it was 6 hours long (overnight) we've decided to get a "portable alternator" as soon as possible. :-D

Ahhh..I just realized who you are and have constructed a whole mental picture of your new alias, the reasons behind it, the conversations that took place, the late night typing that led to it etc etc. ;)

Well, here we are, sitting here running on a portable alternator (yeah, I know, everyone else calls them generators, but that's not what they really are) after Tropical Storm Fay hit SW Florida. It was really nothing more than some wind and a lot of rain here, and the wind was not even that high. Still, as usual, we seem to be some of the first ones to lose our commercial power, and the last ones to get it restored. I bet the Über-rich people that live down on Gordon Drive, right by the beach (here in Naples, FL) have all of their power restored. :sigh: Oh well, at least some of our stuff works (but not Air Conditioning :(). My alternator is not that big, unfortunately (have to buy what you can afford). Paradise, my eye!

C'mon dude, the writing has been on the wall for a long time now for your neck of the woods. :) Hell, nearly every sci fi novel set in the future that even mentions Florida *always* has it completely submerged or so ravaged by constant storms that no one lives there any more. You know where this is all inevitably going...right?

No one with an IQ that exceeds his/her belt size would spend August in Florida. Bullhead City is bad enough, but it's a more-or-less dry heat. The only reason I'm here is that, while it's possible to make enough $ to get by, it's not possible to make enough to get out.

My belt size isn't even close to 3 digits, but I've been living in Florida for over 20 years...then again, I also lived in Cuba for 1.5 years so you really don't know what heat is until you lived there...blah. 8-)

One during a hurricane most of South Florida lost power for a month. While my apartment was restored nearly immediately. To prove to everyone that you don't need A/C to live in S.FL I kept mine off. I think the saddest reality is that people in Florida think they need a generator in the first place.

Well it kinda sucks to have all your food in the refrigerator and freezer go bad because you're out of power for a week.

I'm only here because I found a good job here several years ago. I don't like to move all over the country if I can help it, so I kind of got settled here. Believe me, when I decide to "retire", it will most likely NOT be in Florida.
