Where are all the women?

I think that females hate C++. Never saw a female C++ STL programmer. Concussus surgo. When struck I rise.

There have been a couple who posted regularly ( Cathy and Lauren ) and a couple of 12 year old boys using female names. I suspect also that the feeling of being mostly all male from time to time prompts a discussion in the soapbox of how confusing the female sex is to us, which then alienates the women who ARE here, and the cycle continues. Unless you're going to break it, of course :rose: Christian We're just observing the seasonal migration from VB to VC. Most of these birds will be killed by predators or will die of hunger. Ahhh,,,but I'd imagine it bothers us for entirely different reasons. My company has had a couple other female programmers but they've all quit or been laid off. There is one left but she's quitting at the end of the month.

Christian, thats a very good point and one reason why I would LOVE to have a hug emoticon. Please Chris, do it :) Elaine :rose: Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

Lilian, I have found CP to be (usually) good, but often keep a neutral profile because of the nubmer of times I have been told (often by a 17 year old !) that if I am a good programmer then I can't be a woman ! I have BB (my bear) on my profiles because when I go on the net I get less A/S/L (age/sex/location) messages ! One thing I like about CP is that you don't get that kind of thing but CP is the exception. Elaine :rose: Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?
Trollslayer wrote: I have found CP to be (usually) good, but often keep a neutral profile because of the nubmer of times I have been told (often by a 17 year old !) that if I am a good programmer then I can't be a woman ! ROTFL !!! Someone else here ( I think it was Elaine ) said that the female receptionist at her work once commented that girls 'just aren't good at that technical stuff'. To her credit, I don't think she smacked this girl in the eye. It's funny how many of these sexist perceptions are continued by women themselves. 'I'm a girl, and I'm not good at computers, ergo it's just that girls can't do that sort of thing.' By that rationale, I presume that men are no good at sport or doing odd jobs around the house. Christian P.S. Oh, crap. I think I just told you about something that happened to you !!!! It's still early here, or at least it feels like it after my kids woke me at 4 am to poke me in the eye with a book and say 'daddy, read this'. *grin* my sig in recent times has always consisted of negative things other people say about VB, at least in part because there are one or two people on CP lost in a dreamworld where VB and C# are going to kill C++, and I guess because deep inside they know they are deluded, they take pleasure in being offended by them, not when they get said originally I notice, but just when I quote them. ...if I am a good programmer then I can't be a woman !" What a complete load of crap. When I graduated from college in 1984, we had 12 people getting degrees in computer engineering and 50-some in computer science. The high GPA among the graduates was 3.802, one of the computer engineers. Her closest competition was a guy in the 3.6 range. In case you think this was some kind of podunk vocational school, it's not. It's a major university, with over 18,000 students. Computer Science was the biggest department in the place, with more students in one department than the entire colleges of business or liberal arts. The thing I like about female programmers is that they go in to the field because they want to. Frankly, a lot of the guys I work with are programmers because they make a decent living at it, not because it's something they are particularly motivated to do (or are particularly good at, for that matter). I wish all my software was in C++, but company policy pushes me towards Labview :(( Elaine :rose: Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

I'm here. Yes, new women are frequently attacked and driven off. They are accused of being males in disguise. If you survive the initiation they will be nice to you. Cathy Life's uncertain, have dessert first!
Cathy wrote: Yes, new women are frequently attacked and driven off. They are accused of being males in disguise. Why is it that I can hear this being said by Richard Attenborough ? C'mon though, when someone posts with the header 'new CPian with a difference', the body says 'I am a girl programmer and I work in a company with all girl programmers', and the photo is a model, who is going to buy that at first glance ? How about when someone posts for months and all they talk about is having different boyfriends. Either not a girl, or looking for a different sort of forum IMO. Christian Graus wrote: Is the one left you, or besides you ? Besides me, once she's gone, I'm the only female left in the entire IT department of my company. Not that my company is all that large, but still. Christian Graus wrote: Are the females being especially laid off or finding they want to quit ? They've quit for different reasons. One got married, the woman leaving at the end of the month is going back to school. I don't think they're being singled out for layoffs. A couple months ago, my employers laid off about half the programming staff (10 people), of which only one was a woman.

A thread started by a woman and replies by three different women. Surely this is a CP first?

Call us trailblazers. Good Lord, how long did that take? Our technical lead is female. Half the development staff on my project is female. Actually, where I work is pretty mixed. We're balanced genderwise and have good minority representation.

There are a lot of women in my company, it's just that they are all in administrative postions (reception, payroll, etc.). In fact, there isn't a single female manager where I work.
