Where are all the women?

Ahhh,,,but I'd imagine it bothers us for entirely different reasons. My company has had a couple other female programmers but they've all quit or been laid off. There is one left but she's quitting at the end of the month.
Is the one left you, or besides you ? Are the females being especially laid off or finding they want to quit ? Christian We're just observing the seasonal migration from VB to VC. Most of these birds will be killed by predators or will die of hunger. *grin* my sig in recent times has always consisted of negative things other people say about VB, at least in part because there are one or two people on CP lost in a dreamworld where VB and C# are going to kill C++, and I guess because deep inside they know they are deluded, they take pleasure in being offended by them, not when they get said originally I notice, but just when I quote them. Lilian, I have found CP to be (usually) good, but often keep a neutral profile because of the nubmer of times I have been told (often by a 17 year old !) that if I am a good programmer then I can't be a woman ! I have BB (my bear) on my profiles because when I go on the net I get less A/S/L (age/sex/location) messages ! One thing I like about CP is that you don't get that kind of thing but CP is the exception. Elaine :rose: Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

When I graduated from college in 1984, we had 12 people getting degrees in computer engineering and 50-some in computer science. The high GPA among the graduates was 3.802, one of the computer engineers. Her closest competition was a guy in the 3.6 range. In case you think this was some kind of podunk vocational school, it's not. It's a major university, with over 18,000 students. Computer Science was the biggest department in the place, with more students in one department than the entire colleges of business or liberal arts. The thing I like about female programmers is that they go in to the field because they want to. Frankly, a lot of the guys I work with are programmers because they make a decent living at it, not because it's something they are particularly motivated to do (or are particularly good at, for that matter). I don't get it... 18,000 students... 60-70 in Computer Engineering/Science... CS was the biggest department, bigger than business or liberal arts... One got married, the woman leaving at the end of the month is going back to school. I don't think they're being singled out for layoffs. A couple months ago, my employers laid off about half the programming staff (10 people), of which only one was a woman.

Call us trailblazers. Good Lord, how long did that take? Our technical lead is female. Half the development staff on my project is female. Actually, where I work is pretty mixed. We're balanced genderwise and have good minority representation.

There are a lot of women in my company, it's just that they are all in administrative postions (reception, payroll, etc.). In fact, there isn't a single female manager where I work.

I guess it's a different situation for me. Where I live and work, the majority of the citizens are engineers. I would think Silicone Valley, Seattle, and the DC area are more heterogeneous. I can count the amount of single women on one hand. Sorry, Norm...

LabView? Ugh - you have my sympathy Elaine! What do you do at your place? Oddly enough NI tried to poach me once (I worked for a competitor/customer - it's complex) but when they asked I was happy where I was...I also didn't fancy working on their stuff (I was working on C++ by then) and really didn't fancy commuting to Newbury (their UK HQ) - the traffic's just awful!

Unfortunately, upper management at our HQ were impressed by the pretty pictures with Labview so that has become the preferred platform. However, I am slowly making changes here.... (evil cackle) I hope to get the go ahead for a reasonable sized VC++ prject in the next month which will people from a lot of Labview. When I went on a visit to IBM SSD in San Jose a couple of years ago there quie a few women engineers. The only thing I did note was that about half the technical staff were immigrants (i.e. first generation US citizens). First time I had worked with anyone from south America.
