Yes, its safe, so long as you take measures to be safe. Like by reading the privacy info. and applying the privacy measures on the site. I find most of the people that run into trouble pretty much go out of there way to help that happen. My niece, for instance, is 12, but lists herself as "18 and interested in a relationship with men." She also belongs to a very large network and makes her profile available for everyone to see. Seriously. Her dad is on her friend list and doesn't seem to think her profile is a bad thing. Asking for trouble, I say. Cheers, Drew.

That sounds irresponsible (or tech savvy??)

Yes. I take it you have tried to intervene by talking to her dad and it's okay with him. Red flags just went up all over reading your post.

Some people just don't think it's a problem.

Man, I hope you don't wind up doing a "I told you so" kind of thing down the road :sigh:

Yes, indeed. I wonder if Drew needs to sit down and have a man-to-man talk with his niece's dad about the dangers of the Internet. My kids usually pose themselves as an old creep on the World of Warcraft chat, and that gets people to leave them alone when they play Wow  I've told them not to ever give out any kind of identifiable information about themselves on the Internet. Pretty much struck the fear of God in them about the dangers of the Internet and it works.

I think it's irresponsible, but the point is alot of people don't have a problem with it. You can talk them silly, but they've got to do the changing themselves. Cheers, Drew.

Have you tried scaring the living daylights out of her dad about the dangers? You could always just go to the site and see if your niece is violating TOS by misrepresenting who she is. Your niece and her dad would probably be pissed at you, but it would be for the better.

Yes you are right, after all kids don't know the danger of internet. If some talk to them very nice they can reveal all secrets i guess.

My friend just deleted her profile from facebook and orkut because she was getting lots of spam messages and lots of friend request whom even she doesn't know. Recently somebody her photos from her profile and created a fake profile on her name on one of the social networking site. He/She also tempred with her photos also. Is it safe to be on such social network? Last 2-3 days while reading some forums (including CP), I found that people are misusing the forums (specially programming forums). They ask you very stupid questions with very small piece of information. Even some guys (or girls) asks you a direct solution without doing any search on google. They expect a total solution from forums. They want an instant solution (like ready to eat meal) without knowing or having the knowledge of that corresponding domain. But the real deal is :

Are we misusing the social networking sites and programming forums? Is it okay for me to ask a question like how do I create Resume builder in PHP if I don't have basic (or enough) knowledge of PHP? (BTW I do know php :) ).

I started having this problem on my Bebo account. I just changed my account to private (instead of public) and I havent had any problems since.
