I've heard enough from the people who want the LHC experiment to be stopped because they think it will cause the world (or even the universe) to end. Having said that, if we do manage to screw ourselves out of existence, here's to you guys! :-D I would have liked to meet more of you, but I'm sure I will. ;)

    Cheers, Vıkram.

fear of the unknown will always drive people to be irrational around that which they cannot understand. I am sure eventually we will screw ourselves, but not tomorrow. :-D

I'll buy them a drink if they're right! I'm reminded of bit in Star Trek when it looks like they won't make it: Riker: "To the bitter end Captain?" Picard: "There's nothing bitter about." If I was falling off the edge of the world? Do a swan dive and yell "Yabb dabba doo!" whilst wearing a :bob: t shirt :-D

There are people wetting their pants about the LHC creating mini black holes. So what? Even if they manage to create a black hole the size of a mountain: 1. its gravity is not infinity; only that of a mountain. That is nothing compared to that of the earth. 2. for a mountain to collapse into a black hole, its radius would have to be infinitesimally small - smaller than an atom. Naturally, this black hole's event horizon would also be very small, which means the chance that it will gobble up the Earth is next to zero. People are afraid of the unknown. Do you remember the cults that killed themselves (and sadly, others :( ) before 2000 arrived?

                      Cheers, Vıkram.

I don't mean to be a Grammar Nazi, but shouldn't it be "If I were falling off the edge...", rather than "If I was falling off the edge..."? naw, specifically to many things I am an optimist, but generally speaking in respect to mankind I am a pessimist. I have seen far too much of what goes on behind the seens to ever be optimistic about humanity in general. :) But for the most part, individuals are on the good side. It is just in groups we are bad.

You are correct. Sadly many people now would say that you are also being pedantic (over-fussy). The distinction has nothing to do with religion so at least you're not being sanctimonious!

I've heard enough from the people who want the LHC experiment to be stopped because they think it will cause the world (or even the universe) to end. Having said that, if we do manage to screw ourselves out of existence, here's to you guys! :-D I would have liked to meet more of you, but I'm sure I will. ;)

IIRC they are only running the first protons round the loop tomorrow, not actually colliding, so we should be OK until the weekend at least.
