Infragistics is apparently going into the icon business now: http://www.infragistics.com/netadvantage/icons.aspx#Overview[^] I knew they were getting hammered by DevExpress and Telerik but this is ridiculous. I wish they'd spend a little time modernizing their winform and asp.net suites and a little less time wasting it on frivolous ventures like this one. What in the world are they thinking?

I don't think it is a bad idea. They have good graphic designers and there are companies who want to buy icon packs like these. The price also seems to be good.

Not only does their UI really paint as sluggish as it gets, the entire WinForms suite is pathetic. As for WPF versions, well you can't blame anyone, that tech just loves killing poor CPUs. They say 21 st century, yeah right.. Heck, anything WinForms is crippled because MS and Intel need more CPU power to keep the business running. No one can say they cannot map the GDI+ API onto the new monster GPU hardware. It is a pure lie if they say it is impossible (and they did say so, many times). Regarding DevExpress and Telerik, it is pretty much the same boat. When you look at the source it is so huge, messed up with so many dependencies you know it has no long-term future whatsoever (complexity overload for a few pretty pixels and mega-size framework on top of framework). Just another phase in MS tech mashocism, backward compatibility and 0 guarantee support for any investment in their tech.. If they just wanted to fix the drawing those .NET apps would fly.

I'm going to agree that Infragistics components have been going downhill since 2004 or so while their competitors' products have been improving, but I think the icon venture is actually a pretty smart idea. A lot of companies purchase icon art, and I'm sure Infragistics has the industry contacts to make the venture profitable.

Perhaps they were thinking that they weren't a one person shop, and could afford to let the designers loose on a different area, where they could possibly earn some revenue.

I dunno. The packages they offer, to a large extent, provide eye candy. Can't hurt to offer icon packages that go with the rest of their stuff. Besides, these companies have graphic designers on staff - gotta keep 'em busy. Cheers, Drew.

 Good one! That's too funny! Clearly you've had the same experiences I've had with it. If they'd just modernize and simplify it, I think they're coasting for the last few years. If you've ever had to make a dual asp.net and winform UI using their controls you'd be amazed at how incredibly close they are to each other but for some reason just not enough to re-use any code. They even have common properties between the two for the same type of control just spelled slightly differently. It's a mess.
