I am getting a load of work done on the house and I've had an idea (at this point people get nervous, don't know why). It would be nice if the PC wasn't in the living room (noise and esthetics) so I would like the mouse, keyboard, both monitors (each DVI) and maybe USB/audio that can be 15 metres away. Does anyone know of a suitable product that doesn't cost the earth? Thanks. Elaine :rose:

I don't about any of the other peripherals, but I do know that you can get some pretty long cables for the monitor. I was looking at some various options for an HDMI to DVI-D and they had some pretty long ones. I ended up getting only a 10 metre cable, but I've had no problems with it and I know that they had longer. It did set me back about $70 USD, though there were other cheaper ones that were less shielded.

Hmm.... a good idea, I can extend the other signals at low cost. [Update]There are DVI extenders over Cat5 for about £60/pair here[^], that would save special cabling as I want all this tucked out the way. Thanks for the idea!

A lowend system with a via/mobile CPU and RDP to the main system? You can get stuff in the same form factor as the mac mini, but significantly cheaper.

I find that even on a gigabit network remote desktop is still too slow/annoying to use regularly. Maybe 10G Ethernet will fix that.

I have a 15M Dual Link DVI cable specially made at my desk. the keyboard and mouse are more interesting. The keyboard is a long run USB. and the mouse is wireless RF.

That sounds like your network, not remote desktop. I regularly use RDP to a remote XP machine over a 1MB domestic (and hence contended) DSL line, and for text-based operations (coding, email etc) it's absolutely fine. Sure, detailed graphics editing is a bit painful, but coding, general document editing etc are just fine.

How about a wide/large screen laptop? Almost no noise, not tethered to the desktop in another room, no large cables around the place...

I have twin 19" monitors plus keyboard and mouse that suit me, I just would like the option of not having the PC in the living room.

Sounds pretty straightforward. If the direct connection doesn't work out for you, RDP probably will. My dev box doesn't actually have a keyboard/monitor/mouse...I remote to it (across multiple monitors if available) from one of the other machines in the house. :)

Its definitely not the network file transfers are over 50MB/s with large files. I did not say it was not usable just that any lag on basic operations I find to annoying to use for more than a few minutes. I guess my point is I would not use this method for more than a few minutes if the pc I was logging connecting to was in the same building. Now if it was miles away, it would be acceptable as long as I am doing mostly text based operations.

But it should be possible to just connect them to the laptop, of course it has to support it, but since we're talking of a hypothetical laptop which wasn't bought yet... ;) I don't know if it would cost the Earth, though.

There are devices caled KVM-extender, that allow a Keyboard, Video and Mouse (therefore stands KVM) to be extended with a Cat-5 Cable. Find an example under http://www.minicom.com/[^] under 'KVM-Solutions'. You probalbly need to use two systems, one for each monitor. We use many of such systems in a Video-production gallery, to keep the noise level down, and have the computers in a machine room. They work very well. Didi

Search - KVM Extension, KVM Extender or KVM Cable etc. You can get 35ft extenders for not too much money, but it might get a lot more expensive to go over 35 feet. I'm not sure but I bet you can find one with usb and audio too. Tom
