Most of the 'problem' is related to plain old network admin. Think, proper manageable firewall/router (possibly Linux). From a developer point of view, you would simply have to gather the log data from logs or a database, and work out the costs based on usage.

Your friend has taken a rentacoder job ? Every hotel I've stayed at, I needed to provide a room number and surname the first time I logged in. I assume a cookie stops it from asking every time, but then it knows which room my PC is associated with, I told them. Plainly, if you don't have some sort of login, you'll have a hell of time working out who logged in when.

If you're a good deleveoper, then you'll do research preferably using the internet, and looking at different technologies used to solve you're problem, a good developer won't come begging to have this type of problem solved.

I'd suggest that "your friend" and yourself (who may be one and the same person) take a look at following a different career path.

I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

Well, we have forums that are here to help people. But, despite several people pointing this out to you, you're still posting here. We're not here to make any person who knows how to type able to take RAC jobs b/c we do the work. Which is what this smells of to me.

Yes, programming is actually complex, and only a limited group of people can do it well. Most of them do not look for work on Rentacoder.

Aaaahhh, I had forgotten all about bulletin boards. Those were the days, hogging the telephone line for hours just to read a load of messges from people who knew less than you ... actually it hasn't changed that much really! Now we can receive phone calls at the same time and we can read a lot more of those really useful messages!

Well, back then, the messages were worth the wait. I never had that experience, my dad saw 'war games' and thought if he bought me a modem or an acoustic coupler, that I'd bring about the end of the world.
