There is no justification for new equipment for Salaried labor as companies see any extra time you spend as free. Hourly is easy and can be done yourself. Any hourly developer is perfectly justified in requesting a new machine for increased productivity. However, once on contract I recommended that my three-year old laptop be replaced with a newer model and was told to shut-up, that I was hourly, and they didn't care how long it took there was no budget for equipment but infinite budget for hours.

In general a company from the perspective of management usually sees salaried labor as slave labor on the backside of 40 hours per week. Thus it is very hard to justify time savings when they can just make a "head-count" work extra to finish tasks as assigned. This usually usually carefully crafted into the statement of work, never making a reference to overtime, however, requiring that all tasks be completed by the deadline. Which is, of course, an implicit statement that says you must work overtime to complete tasks as assigned regardless of whose fault the unproductivity lies. Now an honest and ethical employer will look at my statement as if I am crazy. But the sad reality is that most employers will take full-advantage of employees that let them. Which is why I prefer hourly. Not only can I take a guilt free long lunch but I never have to worry about that call at 9PM on Friday night or that unexpected working weekend.

where would you go to get those metrics?

Clearly, as recent Gartner Group studies have shown, employees receiving a top of the line laptop, generally in the $5000 range, usually show a 124% performance improvement within 2-3 business days. Employees receiving a $8000 or better laptop, along with a second 30" monitor, tend to see a 237% performance improvement, usually within 4-6 working days. Employees receiving a $3000 or better laptop, and a $5000 or better lap dance(s) have been known to work without stop for 3 days. Gartner analyst Jenna Jameson strongly recommends that managers considering ways to improve their employees performance look into the aforementioned upgrades. Gartner analyst Jameson also stated that Gartner is predicting that electronic mail (what Gartner is terming "e-mail" for short) will be the most productive tool in the enterprise for 2009.

That's not an issue for us. Our company EXPECTS that we do not put in more than about 45 hours/week. It's part of our culture.

Depends where you are - I'm salaried, but the company I work for charges internally for our time on an hourly basis - the hourly rate includes salary + facilities (heating, lighting, electricity etc). We have no trouble using that hourly rate for capital outlay justifications. Guess it all depends how enlightened your management are.

WTF? Having spent the last several years as both Salaried AND Management in several different organizations I can assure you not all employers see it this way. Infact, I've seen just the opposite where the employees are given newer/upgraded equipment and software to continue to do thier jobs better REGARDLESS of salary or hourly status. Cost effect all employees, not just salaried or hourly. But that's been my expierence, just as I assume that your basing the above statement your expierence.

LOL this is why I sanity-check during the interview: "What was your longest project in the lst year?" "How much overtime did YOU work in the last week/month/year?", etc. Though, truth, I won't be changing jobs soon. I nearly did, but my unconscious rebelled suddenly, and I realized I was walking into a death trap, especially in comparison with what I do in my current position (I'm salaried, but overtime is truly rare).
