Where do people go to buy mp3s ? Amazon won't sell out of the country and iTunes sells m4p's, which my daughters player cannot play.

I buy mine from www.emusic.com. They don't do top 40 type stuff, but they are much cheaper than the alternatives, and even better, DRM free :) You basically subscribe, and download between 25 and 75 tracks a month depending on the subscription level.

I use iTunes (sparingly) - if you look for 'iTunes Plus' - they are a) m4a (i.e. no DRM), b) 320kbps rather than 128kbps. So, either your daughters player might be compatible with m4a, or you can legally just transcode with something like dbPowerAmp. If you look at Iron Maiden's back catalogue on iTunes, you should see 'iTunes Plus' next to each album (except the single The Trooper)...unless it's not made it to Oz yet... The only other place I've downloaded from is Dischord[^] - which would be fine if your daughter was into the DC punk scene. I have heard good things about emusic, but never used them. The one that irritates me is Amazon - if they spread their MP3 store to the UK, I'd be on it in a shot. Which probably means it'd be better for my bank balance if they don't bring that service to the UK...

7Digital - massive selection of DRM free MP3 material from all the majors. There are still pockets of WMA but these are being eradicated daily. www.gomusic.ru I'm not sure if the site is still open. I was unable to accept payment for a while. But the songs are super cheap.

I didn't get any requirements for the signature

You might as well just torrent them, the RIAA will use the same crushed glass lube when their attack lawyers come after you either way...

No, I'm pretty sure gomusic.ru is legal. Also, you don't have to worry about downloading viruses / wrong songs / bad tags etc... Most of the tracks I have purchased I owned on tape or cd at some point anyway. And if you feel bad about it, you can always mail the artist a dollar or two. If you want to be sure your legal or are worried about ethics, then half.com usually has CDs for much less than Itunes. Whatever you do, don't pay .99 per song. You are getting ripped off.

The compulsory licensing for next to nothing clause in russian law won't help you in a US/EU/etc court, and unlike the metaphysics of if putting a file up to share if you can't prove anyone downloaded it is a violation, the RIAA will only need to subpoena your credit card records to prove it...
