Part of the problem is that postings such as this contain so many grammatical errors and this puts doubt into the reader's mind. Foolish questions being asked by people purporting to be professional programmers have a very detrimental effect on the perception of Indian programmers. To get a different explanation maybe you could ask John Simmons / Outlaw Programmer the same question.

I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

Christian can answer for himself, but personally speaking, and not wishing to generalise it to ALL Indians, nevertheless the vast majority of badly-written or inappropriate posts on this site come from India. I know English isn't be the first language of many people, but it is common courtesy to find out about the company you are in before opening your mouth. It doesn't take long to find out that: a) posting homework assignments here asking for others to do your work is not appreciated; b) cross-posting is not appreciated; c) putting URGENT in your subject line is not appreciated; d) asking questions when a quick search on Google would find the answer for you is not appreciated; e) asking questions when it is clear the poster has made little or no attempt to work it out themselves is not appreciated; f) writing in such bad English that no-one can understand your question is not going to get you an answer. Sorry, but I for one get the impression that posters from India are more guilty of the above than those from other countries. It is frustrating, and I have had to bite my tongue on numerous occasions - perhaps Christian is just a little less patient than me....

Sadly there are a large number of Indians who let down the many good ones and we do get times when the message boardsd get flooded by the former.

I do not think Christian is being racist against Indians. I think his problem, like others have, is that the lack of full formal training is evident. It seems to many that getting a PC, connecting to the internet, downloading some info on programming, doing a few simple VB or even C# apps, and, Hey Presto, "I am a Programmer" Then the questions begin! (usually in the lounge!). Not all are as bad as I described, but many on here will be able to tell a tale or two much like I described above. That is the problem. Coupled with the fact that companies are shipping out coding jobs to the Subcontinent because of costs. (Although it often costs more as the lack of knowledge and communications skills ensure cockups are designed in.)

Yes, of course, but we don't all go on to claim we are 'Fully Competent Programmers' within 6 weeks of obtaining our first Dell!

Since Britain is giving them over £50 million a year in Aid, it ought really to be a British Mission to the Moon! We Brits have a habit of dealing with Indian Transport, We did your railways and your roads! And now, it seems, your space travel.

Our problems aren't with Indians or Indian companies. There are several fantastic Indian developers who regularly contribute to this site who are the equal of anybody. Our problems are with incompetent and lazy programmers. Unfortunately, if you take a look at the ASP.NET forum, there are so many basic questions from Indian programmers who ask for solutions to very simple problems. They don't look things up on Google. They demand instant answers by telling us it's urgent - well whoop-de-frickin'-do for you chummy, who cares? They downvote you if you don't provide fully working solutions for them? They lack basic knowledge, and they will insist on using text speak which takes ages to translate. Again, this can be applied to many people, but unfortunately we see a predominance of Indian's who are like this. Also, as stated before, this doesn't apply to all Indian's. There are several here who I'd be proud to hire.

Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

Since Britain is giving them over £50 million a year in Aid, it ought really to be a British Mission to the Moon! We Brits have a habit of dealing with Indian Transport, We did your railways and your roads! And now, it seems, your space travel.

Not when they can't even start sentences with a capital letter. :)

I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)
