Mimicking a foreign accent in a derogatory manner could
contribute to a hostile work environment based on national
    origin.

OK...  Is there a way to mimic an accent in a non-derogatory manner?    Peace!

Somebody shoot me...    I would love to meet the people that come up with the material for these training courses, and spend 2 hours with them to show them what real harassment is all about. :)    One of my favorites - someone starts telling a joke, and from the opener you can tell that it could be racy.  Does the overly-sensitive employee leave the group knowing their limitations and that they might get offended?  Nope, that would be FAR too easy.  Instead, they do the logical thing, of course -- they hang around, listen to the entire joke, laugh with everyone else, and then run to HR to complain about it.    Hey!  Here is a simple concept - how about sneaker-netting yourself out of the room next time and save everyone else the trouble? :)    Heh...  I love this Politically Correct, everyone's-feelings-matter-except-the-one-telling-the-joke stuff.  I really do.    Ahhh...  I feel better now...    Anyone else feel the same about all this PC stuff?  Or is it just me?    Peace!

An employee in my company broke her leg in her honeymoon. The manager said "they must had a lot of fun" to another employee. A third employee over-heard it and reported to HR. The manager was fired.

Yup, I agree....But unfortunately, I can't really say what I really think here in case I offend someone. Best saved for the soap box. What's the difference between women and....oh no...hang on.....women won't like that....what's the biggest cause of.....oh.....not that one either....An English man, an.....nope, racist...A dyslexic man walks into....Dammit all the best jokes are offensive.

Unfortunately I have to work hard NOT to pick up accents. I know it bothers people, but the longer I am exposed to someone with an accent that I have to work with the greater the chance

I happen to agree with this view (if you don't want to hear a joke, don't hang around and listen to it). I have an interesting harassment story from 1986... I was working for United Technologies, and I inherited a desk in an office that housed two programmers. The office was kind of divided into two halves by a row of filing cabinets that essentially blocked both desks from direct view if you happened to be standing in the doorway. On the hidden side of the filing cabinets, a swimsuit calendar (from Cisco I think) was hanging - it was there BEFORE I occupied the desk, and the month had not been advanced since early in the year (the desk had been empty for two months before I even started at the company). Well, it happens that a female employee (a thoroughly unattractive one, at that) came in to ask me a question, and I hadn't even noticed that she saw the calendar. She didn't say anything about it. The next day, I was called out on the carpet for having the calendar, even though I had nothing to do with it being there. Now, let's talk about bullshit workplace issues. If you don't like the calendar, don't freakin' look at it!

Someone overhears (read: is listening in, not minding their own business) a phone call a couple of cubes over where someone else is talking about their date last night that went well.  The eavesdropper gets offended.    Hey, anyone remember the days when MYOB actually meant something...?  We used to tell it to other busybody kids in the schoolyard when they were listening in on stuff.    Peace!

I'm the same, although I was brought up around varying accents. Both parents from Sheffield, so when I'm up north, it switch fast and naturally, however I was raised in the south and that's where I live now and that's how most people hear me. They think I'm pretty weird when as soon as I hit the Yorkshire borders it's all e-by-gum

I feel your pain. We had the same thing here at work about 2 weeks ago. By the end of the session I was left thinking that, other than mumbling "Yes" or "No", just don't talk to anyone at work. It's simpler.

Yup, I agree....But unfortunately, I can't really say what I really think here in case I offend someone. Best saved for the soap box. Peace!

                                About touching...

Before you touch someone, ask yourself:
Is it possible that someone might see the physical contact and be offended?

What? **_SEE_** THE PHYSICAL CONTACT AND BE OFFENDED?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!  Just observe it and be offended?!    I need to get off this human race train...! :) [edit]    I shudder to think what could happen if my wife and kids visit and I happen giving them a hug or, God Forbid, give my wife a kiss, and BE SEEN DOING IT!!!    Peace!

Flipside, someone offers their hand for a shake, I refuse, is that offensive? So therefore it is offensive to both touch and not touch? What we need to do is kill the pc brigade and go back to people being grown up. I demand the right to be offensive!

Mimicking a foreign accent in a derogatory manner could
contribute to a hostile work environment based on national
                                          origin.

OK...  Is there a way to mimic an accent in a non-derogatory manner?    Peace!

                                          Yes, in a humorous way.
