                        Slightly OT, here's an odd one: cob (=male swan) is from Middle English but pen (=female swan) is from Welsh. Wonder why that happened?

                            Such is the English Language. Penguin is a welsh derived word too! (So, I think, is Corgi). Actually you wish to check them, they may be ficts, not facts :)

                              I know already they are correct! Penguin is from penn (head) + gwynn (white). It doesn't have a white head but the name got applied to it through an unknown route. Corgi is from korr (v small) + ki (dog). (Cornish equivalents used, I don't speak Welsh but they're much the same in this case!)
