I agree. But I don't know that what marriage means, requires a legal basis. Personally, I'd like to see some arrangement that affords them the rights that they are denied, and leaves marriage alone. Seems like that would be a win win. How to do that seems to be the big issue, and I think that's all a legal issue.

Churches or any other private organisation that wants to set itself up in the marriage-issuing business. While I agree that the state should only provide civil unions, I doubt that the proposal will work politically. The traditionalists who oppose gay marriage are also likely to be traditionalists in the sense of wanting state sanctioning of their marriage.

Religious fundamentalists seem to threaten violence more than any other group. They also burn down abortion clinics. And then when they systematically ruin the lives of homosexual people, they suddenly play innocent, as if they're the most persecuted group in history and the whole world's against them.
Do abortion clinics still get burned down ? I wonder how many actually did. There are, of course, extremists, as there are in most groups of people. It just gets mentioned so often and I wonder how widespread it actually was. 'they also burn down abortion clinics' sure implies that any fundamentalist, however you define that, carries some matches and petrol in the car, in case they see a clinic on the way to work. I do agree that it's stupid for Christians to assume to seek to legislate their personal morality. I hate that.

Yeah. It seems that the more arguments I hear in favour of objective morality, the more I identify with 'moral nihilism'. I figure, until you can prove that particular morals produce favourable social outcomes, then it's just another opinion.

A couple of people have suggested similar ideas, yes, including me. Where did I say "I have no idea how this could possibly be done"? That comment was for Jason's benefit, not your ridicule. I sypmathise with his stance and hoped to lead him to a similar conclusion to what I had. Obviously I was too late to stop your trasformation into dickhead mode. Was there a full moon last night?
