Pity vote?

I seriously doubt it. Sure, I whine a lot about the article voting system, but there's enough people here that "pity voting" would not be a factor. On the other hand, I often rely on the kindness of strangers. [EDIT] BTW, the article in question has been generally well-received in its own right (129+ votes and a popularity > 9.50), and if it wasn't, it wouldn't be on the list in the first place. I'm glad it's on a list, but it was kind of unexpected because it isn't about a given language. As far as disrespecting the work of the other developers, I don't think that's the case. I haven't asked that others vote for my article (in the contest), and there are two weeks remaining in the voting period, so anything could happen. If my article wins, great. If someone else's does, great.

The problem comes down to awareness. Johns article is good. Many people are aware of it because it has been discussed here several times during it's creation (originally as a forum post) and subsequent posting as an article. John also brought attention to it on the voting page. Thus many people know about it, thus many people vote for it. I would bet most of the people who voted for it didn't read all the other articles available for voting on. The other contenders are equally as welcome to advertise and market their articles to raise awareness. This is democracy. It has it's flaws, sometimes it sucks, but it's the best system we have. Currently, of all 5 million+ CP members, more of them would choose Johns article over the other choices. the fact that most of the members don't care enough to cast a vote, and those that do quite possibly haven't made the effort to review all the available options is fairly irrelevant. [I decided not to vote, despite finding Johns article quite interesting, mainly because I don't have time to properly read all 10 articles and make a valid judgement]

You're making two judgement calls here. Your phrase "the real work" implies that John's article is not 'real work', which could not be more wrong. Secondly, you are also stating that any positive vote for John's article is disrespectful of other authors. That's simply prejudicial on your part.

delete this;not for me.... I would be unconscious before the last foot, no problem. it would be the first few feet of psychological terror that would be more of a problem.... of course the last few feet makes the first few feet moot, so I guess none of them are really a problem. ;P

In addition to what others have said... John's article applies to more people and as such it is going to get more votes. For example, SBJ's article on integrating MVC within MFC is certainly a well written article, but is only going to be applicable to those who, #1 use MFC, or #2 are at least interested in using the MVC architecture. Fewer people interested in the article = less votes.

Pity? No. I don't write in C++, therefore I don't vote on the articles. I like what John had to say... it makes sense! Would I put it in C++? My guess is, John decided the category, so, that is his choice. Tim
Actually, I didn't decide the category. In fact, I thought it wasn't eligible in the first place because it doesn't really have anything to do with a specific language.

I can still be the real John Simmons when the need arises. I've been making a concerted effort to be a bit less abrasive. Besides that, every time I let loose on someone, retribution is applied via article voting. Some folks simply can't separate forum postings from article quality. Since Chris doesn't currently have the resources to address the issue, I have to take my own steps to protect my article ratings.
