Given the current predilection of piracy round the horn of Africa I make the following suggestions. The country in which the ship is registered should send it's navy to blast the pirates out of the sea. Piracy is currently seen in international law as an act of war, so the country from which the pirates come should be bombed. If necessary sink the vessel they have boarded in order to stop them. Do not alter the status of Piracy to Criminal Act, like the British Government is trying to do, it will only mean killing pirates becomes a crime and we will need to give them a fair trial.

Yep! Instead of blowing them out of the water we have to pay to imprison them, then offer them asylum cos they would be shot if we sent them back to Somalia!

Kinda reminds me off the situation here. People actually commit crimes to go to prison because there the equivalent of a 5 star hotel (that's actually how we call them). The problem we have now is that the prisons are overcrowded so the real criminals just get released because of 'no room' (or have house arrest, like that is going to help) Ah there is so much wrong with the justice system here that its depressing to think about it. So back to work for me (although its a slow day :sigh: ) [EDIT]Typo [/EDIT]

Speaking generally, the rule should be that any immigrant or asylum seeker who turns out to be a criminal should be deported to their country of origin. What happens to them then should be no concern of ours. Most of the British public agrees with this the last I heard.

Yeah, blowing them out of the water is real justice. Huzzah! (Why do you guys think piracy should be treated differently to hijacking?)

              cheers, Paul M. Watson.

Sounds familiar. There are even cases of drug dealers breaking into prisons to supply drugs and prisoners choosing not to follow them back out!

But if it's registered in a country run by a dubious regime, or one with an ineffective navy (e.g. Oz in December ;) ) they'll do nothing. PS - "it's navy"??? You're slipping, Dave!

Didn't say that just said that the justice system has alot of holes in it. I'm more for the 'deport them back to there country no matter what' solution. Or put them all together on an island and let them figure it out for themself. O wait that was a movie :)

Isn't that basicly the same (just differant wording) ?

Would the above apply to someone if they were to hire a boat and burn an ISO to CD-Rom without permission (Software Piracy on the high Seas)?

I don't agree. Somalia doesn't support piracy, they condemn it, but they don't have the means to stop it. You can imagine what kind of burden is to make order in such a chaotic country, where illegal groups are much more powerful than the government's forces.

Given that the rules for immigration are that it must be claimed at the first border the immigree (?) comes to, the UK is an island and very few asylum seekers come in by boat from their original country, we shouldn't have a problem. However, the PC brigade wouldn't dare allow the government to enforce it! The Canaries have an issue with boat travelling seekers, they're thrown into a tin shed at the airport and sent back within 24 hours if caught... Neil

They are not kept on board, they are taken off to the land somewhere.

Wow, it seems the British government is just as inept as the USA. I've read crazy stories about how criminals are always released from prison in England and now this...
