Is Brazil the new India ? If it is, and if you're looking to offload work to save money, I look forward to you crying about your experiences here in the lounge. I wonder if it will serve as a warning to others.

I'm from Brazil, maybe I can help with some info to you. When you talk about smaller companies doing ASP.NET, you'll have to be very careful when selecting the company1. I'd advise you to carefully look at the staff, ask for certifications - I believe that certifications means nothing, but they show that they at least worry about making their resumes look good. Check references with their customers. Ask for 5 satisfied customers, and 5 customers that are facing problems: you'll probably see a pattern, where are their strengths and weaknesses. Also, check that their technical staff (and not only their salesmen) are fluent in English. Most people here say that they can speak English, but they can't. Is your company located in Brazil? If so, be aware that there are labor laws here that can make your company responsible for a lot of taxes if the company you hire don't pay theirs (again, this only applies to companies located in Brazil). 1 There are a lot of good companies here, but small companies specializing in ASP.NET work in Brazil often are created by people that only know how to glue together a lot of scripts that they copied & pasted from the Web.

I hope not. We have very good people here, but they are almost as expensive as everywhere else. I hope people don't expect to hire a Brazilian Christian Graus for peanuts. If people are looking at a Brazilian company saying "hey, this company can do this project for 50% less", don't believe it. Expect cost reductions like 20% (because we don't pay several taxes when exporting), but you'll probably have some overhead when working with a Brazilian company (travel costs, management, etc).

yeah, that's kind of my point, people who outsource solely to save money, forget that the lowest bidder is unlikely to be the best, and are very likely unwilling to spend money on travel, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of good devs in Brazil, as there are in India. The issue is to blindly outsource and hope for the project to magically get done for peanuts, is never going to work.

Just to give you some number, a senior .NET developer in Brazil usually receives R$50/h, aproximatelly U$25. What Daniel said about labor laws and taxes is really true. I have a friend in L.A. who tried to move his dev team to Brazil and he got crazy with this kind of issues. He gave up. Hard truth.
