Well, presumably a TORRENT of rain, drop the second R, add an M (Roman 1,000) - but I'm not sure why you drop the R, unless that's indicated by 'run but'.

Second, it is a CRYPTIC crossword, so any pun or play on words that results in HIDDEN clues is allowable. Third, Its or It's. Given the Answer was Torment, IT IS TORMENT ie it's, or the TORMENT was relating to it, therefore ITS TORMENT. Either allowable given the contrext. Remember that contextualising things makes just about anything acceptable. Torment is neither Singular nor Plural, as it is an intangible noun. There is nothing wrong either grammatically nor semantically with my clue. I refer you to rule 4. "The setter is not responsible for any ignorance of the solver" :)

Well, of course you are entitled to your opinion, but the setter makes the rules! :) (Remember Rule 7... Rule 7 is held in abeyance and may be used for any purpose at the setter's discretion).
