Well, presumably a TORRENT of rain, drop the second R, add an M (Roman 1,000) - but I'm not sure why you drop the R, unless that's indicated by 'run but'.

Well that's just bollocks, isn't it? Rain drops run implies removing the R from Torrent? Maybe if it was "Rain drops run initially" but since when did the use of a word imply it's initial without some clue that that is what is intended? AND in the original clue it was Raindrops run - not rain drops run. Oh - and wile I am on a rant, the clue itself does not make any sort of sense as a sentence "Raindrops run but gain a thousand for it's pains" Fair enough, if you had Rain drops run, gaining a thousand for its pain Then the "its" (not "it's") refers to the rain not the raindrops and at loeast the sentense structure makes sense. And Pain should be singular as Torment is singular - not Torments. "Males in a civil wrong cause pain" Maybe it was the VAT stress!

Firstly... Run is R! Run in cricket is denoted by the letter R, and as this game is played by about a 1/3rd of the world you really should know that. Second, it is a CRYPTIC crossword, so any pun or play on words that results in HIDDEN clues is allowable. Third, Its or It's. Given the Answer was Torment, IT IS TORMENT ie it's, or the TORMENT was relating to it, therefore ITS TORMENT. Either allowable given the contrext. Remember that contextualising things makes just about anything acceptable. Torment is neither Singular nor Plural, as it is an intangible noun. There is nothing wrong either grammatically nor semantically with my clue. I refer you to rule 4. "The setter is not responsible for any ignorance of the solver" :)

Well, of course you are entitled to your opinion, but the setter makes the rules! :) (Remember Rule 7... Rule 7 is held in abeyance and may be used for any purpose at the setter's discretion).
