I disagree about its lack of stability, I have been using it every single day for the last 5 years with a db of a few hundred mb (no not the 27GB db I use with postgresql) and I have never had a single stability problem with mysql. Although I have never used the absolute highest release available so maybe this is the reason.

MySql is a brilliant DB. I prefer it as an engine along with PostGreSql and FireBird (personal fav). The major whopping advantage MS has over any of these is that their front-end for DB development is infinitely better than anything they have.

What should you then expect from MySQL AnyApplication 5.1? * If you are using MySQL AnyApplication 5.1 just as a 'better' version of MySQL AnyApplication 5.0 and you don't plan to use any of the new features in MySQL AnyApplication 5.1 then you are probably fine to try out MySQL AnyApplication 5.1. You should however not put it into production without testing it fully, preferably by running it on a couple of slaves for some weeks. It may even be the best to wait for a couple of minor/patch releases before putting the MySQL AnyApplication 5.1 server into production. * Don't expect that all critical bugs that you may have encountered in 5.0 to be fixed in 5.1. Even if we have fixed a big majority of the bugs from 5.0 some really critical ones still haven't been addressed. * If you plan to use any of the new features of MySQL AnyApplication 5.1, regard these as if they would be of beta quality. Test any usage of these features extensively for in close-to-live scenarios before putting them onto a production server. * If you are a new user trying out MySQL AnyApplication for the first time, you should use MySQL AnyApplication 5.1; At least it's better than the MySQL AnyApplication 5.0 community version which has not been updated for some time. fixt

Interbase/FireBurd has the best IDEs from the listed, although it is obsolete, unstable, not very good documented and barely useless on the UNIX\Linux platform. PostgreSQL is other cattle of fish and it is not very correct to be listed together with FireBurd and MySQL - IMHO.

MySQL's disdain for commercial developers is what made them a joke to me many years ago. Firebird is excellent and has decent front end tools available from third parties. I can't fathom any reason in the world to use MySQL.

For my basic needs, SQLyog[^] does a brilliant job for me on MySQL.
