StupidFilter. That's fascinating. That site leads to a Wikipedia article about "Eternal September[^]". That article, in and of itself, is quite amazing. It's a form of virtual experiment that seems to demonstrate that a lack of enculturation results in anarchy andstupidity. An absence of social taboos almost grants idiocy free reign. Wow. I think that idea is applicable in a broad sense.

I remember the period well. There were AOLers who thought that Usenet was a service provided by and under the control of AOL. In one famous case, an AOLer was flamed and responded by threatening to report the flamer to Steve Case. I rather suspect that it is not CSS as CSS, I feel, is probably not old enough - late teens/early 20's ? But then, its hard to tell. :~

[edit] actually, I have no objection at all to the kind of filtering feature that you propose, since it affects only what you might see, and is entirely under your control. I seriously doubt that it would result in driving the CSS's or Datos' or Ilions away, for there would always be some who either chose to not use the filtering, or who occasionally chose to slum. That alone would provide sufficient support to keep these around - they don't require much. I do object to vigilante tools like the current N 1-votes and you're gone garbage, simply because I resent others choosing what I can or can't see without my participation or permission. The site owners have such a right, which they need in order to protect themselves from liability caused by careless or intentionally harmful fools, but the rest of us don't. If some forums were to become moderated, and the moderators selected by site management, that would also be fine (provided it were made clear that the forums were moderated, and what the rules were). I requested a similar feature about a month ago. The option to have all threads or branches started by a user be displayed collapsed by default. That way their crap doesn't clutter the forums but you can still have a look if you want. Of course it would only be a small step on to include total filtering which removes all traces for all eternity :D heh though I'm sure similar such features have been requested for years now.

The post deleting stuff was added because of people like CSS and the sort of drivel he used to incessantly post. It was a way to move beyond admins having to watch all the time to remove posts that frankly, could cause CP legal issues if nothing else. And, it's never my intention to ban people if it's avoidable. I think just letting me decide there are people I don't want to see, is a fair solution for exactly the reasons you say.
