Ok, as an adult presents are usually pretty lame. Last year I got a tri-fold wallet (whatever good that does), previous years have been soap, ties, belts, basically whatever you would find at the last second as a Men's Gift. This year, out of the blue my mother decided to go all out and got me a gift I wouldn't have expected from anyone; let alone my mom. A link to help share the surprise[^] Kind of makes the gift I got her for her birthday[^] pale in comparison.

I dropped my one of those today, and broke one of the bits that attach the lens, so now it won't work unless I push it hard. But, I was going to buy a better lens anyhow.... I suspect my habit of carrying it by the lens meant it was half gone already.

I have had my camera a few days and I already want a new lense. The kit lense is fine but the aperture is not nearly wide enough. I think the 50mm f/1.2 L Series Prime would be perfect for a lot of the shots I like to take. But then it is nearly $1,500 USD! With respect to carrying the camera by the flimsy plastic kit lense, dumb a** :) That lense is very flimsy. I don't really trust it too much.

Yeah, I know, I guess I took it for granted. And yeah, I agree, the lenses are super expensive. That's why I never bought one.

Congratulations, Ennis! That is a very nice gift indeed. The kit lens is not the best but whether or not it is suitable for you depends on your current experience level as a photographer. If it's relatively low, I'd stay with the kit lens until I'd mastered the use of the DSLR under different lighting conditions and with different subjects. If your experience level is high you probably don't need me telling you what is best. ;) What kind of photography do you think you are going to want to do? (people, landscape, wildlife/birds, macro, etc).
