Didn't we call this Time Sharing back in the day? Wonder if there's a per pixel mouse movement charge. :)

Brings back memories of the whole micropayments thing when DEC considered charging fractions of a penny for AltaVista usage. /ravi

Not really too different to paying for your mobile wanker phone usage, is it? You pay for calls, texts MMS etc. at different rates.

If I knew then what I know today, then I'd know the same now as I did then - then what would be the point? .\\axxx (That's an 'M')

Yeah that plan didn't get very far either, and look where DEC is today? Mike

yeah, but MS tries to revive the idea every 18 months. they just slap a new name on it and hope it catches this time...

Yet another OpenVMS feature working its way into Windows? I'd rather have logicals and symbols; file versions would be very good too.

Does anyone happen to know if time-sharing is still being implemented? I remember a story my astronomy proffessor (ex nasa egineer, my areas crawling with them :) told us a bout what is or was considereed the most powerful computer in the world based on some measurement*... where IBM* rents out a mainframe network* for $xxx, xxx and lexus* rented y* hours so it could calculate aerodynamic algorithyms*, perfecting how their cars perform... * indicates a detail i have forgotten[exceot that last one, I just forgot how to spell it] Anyway, hopefully someone has an Idea what im talking about and can substantiate this... Seemed like an interesting story at the time.

From WikiPedia: "With the rise of microcomputing in the early 1980s, time-sharing faded into the background because the individual microprocessors were sufficiently inexpensive that a single person could have all the CPU time dedicated solely to their needs, even when idle. "The Internet has brought the general concept of time-sharing back into popularity. Expensive corporate server farms costing millions can host thousands of customers all sharing the same common resources. As with the early serial terminals, websites operate primarily in bursts of activity followed by periods of idle time. This bursting nature permits the service to be used by many website customers at once, and none of them notice any delays in communications until the servers start to get very busy." /ravi
