Actually the moniker comes from a RAH novel, the moon is a harsh mistress, I'm an avid SF reader. Can't stand historical novels.

Well deserved. Only a matter of time and a bit of charidee work before JK Rowling joins hin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J_K_Rowling[^] Of the old guard immediately springing to mind is Henry Rider Haggard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._Rider_Haggard[^]. His books were probably the basis of the Indiana Jones films, one of his characters was in the the 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' film (the Sean Connery one), he invented the fantasy/SF concept of the 'Lost World' in the 19th century which spawned everything from The Time Machine and Tarzan to Jurassic Park. Unfortunately HG Wells was a socialist (never a good way to get a knighthood 100 years ago) and Tolkien only received an OBE shortly before his death. Jules Verne was French, CS Lewis Irish and Edgar Allan Poe American - so were never in the running!

I was surprised she wasn't on the list already because she gave a million pounds to the ruling Labour party this year... Oh, wait... But they can receive Honorary Knighthoods, just like Bill Gates. This means they can use the postfix (i.e. put KBE or GBE after their name) but cannot use the Titular (i.e. put Sir before their name)

Anyone anywhere can put "Sir" (or "Dr." or whatever) before their name; I do. You just can't claim that it means anything. I often thought it would be interesting to name my kid Admiral. I see no problem with a baseball or football fan giving a kid Cardinal as a middle name. I get rather annoyed at websites that allow only require one of Mr., Mrs., and Ms.; I don't want any of those, far too common.

He deserves the knighthood just for collaborating with Ian Stewart and Jack Cohen on "The Science of Discworld" trilogy. These books are the best description of why humans need to colonize space soon (i.e. in the next hundred years before we really run out of cheap energy) I have ever read, and the more people who get the idea and start to contribute to space colonization projects, the more likely we will be to succeed in the short time we have available. Thank you Sir Terence.

I reread it every couple of years or so. I go on a week-long bike tour every year, and take a pile of books with me. Year before last, I took a dozen Heinlein's along that I hadn't read in a long while :cool:.
