RIP Dr Dobbs
-
It seems that Dr Dobbs has issued its last[^]. I used to subscribe in the late 90s and early 2000s but I hadn't read it in about 5 years. I guess the readership just fell off over the last few years until it wasn't financially viable any more. It's a shame because in its day it was an excellent publication. I remember anticipating its arrival each month in the 90s.

I had a subscription to Dr. Dobbs from the mid 80's through the early 90's. It was really good then. A couple of years ago I received an offer for a free year's subscription to it. The current version was only a pale shadow of the original.

Unfortunately, many publications share the same fate. It has something to do with internet.

Let's hope internet doesn't affect newspapers else one day we will hear it is the last day for this newspaper due to online news.

No worries. Online classifieds are killing them faster.

You're right. These facts that you've laid out totally contradict the wild ramblings that I pulled off the back of cornflakes packets.

That's a shame but everything has a time and place, I too remember anticipating each issue...in the 90s which I guess is clearly the problem they have. :) The moment I lost interest in Dr. Dobb's pretty much marked my transition from being a hobbyist to a career programmer. Dr. Dobbs was in the early days primarily about algorithms and real deep stuff, it's demise is a sign of the maturity of the computer industry as much as the more widespread death of print journals.
