And UAC? And is the 'basic' UI still godawful ugly? Any compatibility issues?

    Off by default.

    More like MAC OS.

Loaded on a 'generic' PC (build by our local PC supplier), works first time with no issues. On the whole I'm impressed, but I'm biased as I think Vista is good.

No. But since, Windows XP being the immediate ancestor of Vista, I would expect it to work. All I am asking is for a better compatibility mode. :)

Wine's an emulator, for crying out loud! (ok.. ok, I'm know [W]ine [I]s [N]ot an [E]mulator). Ever heard of Mame? Does that mean that Vista should run arcade games natively?

Of course it's not called "successor".. It's a kernel. Not in any way connected to Windows, Microsoft or anything similar.

Correct. It's not Windows XP, it's XP's successor. That means, not everything is the same!

You payed for your third-party applications designed for XP and you think you deserve to run them on a tottaly new OS... OK.. I get your point. Complain to the manufacturers of those apps, rant them, not Vista! They're the ones who should make adjustments to their software, so it can run with new systems! What do you want? Billy running around in every software company in the world, adjusting their software to Vista's kernel?

Geez.... ok fine use Vista, go and complain to all the companies with whom you have all the troubles. Vista is really troublesome when it comes to compatability. then you should hate XP just as much... it made a whole bunch of Windows 98/Me software fail.

Yeah even if Windows 7 doesn't break any new grounds, I would atleast expect it to be predictable. That wasn't the case with Vista. Once when I installed Alcohol 120% in friend's laptop, it started showing BSOD every time I started it due to some driver failure. He got furious on me. From then on I decided to practise caution and read personal reviews before I touch any advanced version of Windows. Till then, I am happy with SP2 :)

The older versions of Alcohol 120% were using the "old style" sys driver that messed up Vista, as I read from one post on their forum. I installed a perfectly working older version 1.9.5.3823 on Vista home premium SP1 and hope I'll be able to do it in future Windows. I only needed to install the latest SCSI sptd driver before the Alcohol's installer, after that it all went smooth. They officially support in Vista only newer versions, but why pay big bucks for new one because new games can't be fooled with emulators. :^)

Downloaded it yesterday and installed it on a spare laptop (Acer 5520). Everything was enabled out of the box, no unknown devices. Even the webcam was detected and installed. Windows Update is a lot nicer. It now displays a panel on the right side of the screen giving a brief description of the update and links to more information. I had problems installing any of the Virtual CD tools (even tools some sites said worked wouldn't install correctly) I use. But I did successfully install Doom 3, AVG Free 8 and a couple other small utilities. Next up is Visual Studio 2008 SP1. :) Flynn

I can't say for sure if it is the best, but I have seen far too many Ubuntu fan boys and so, why not give it a try? I've tried fedora and OpenSUSE so far and liked both of them so far. Let me see what Ubuntu has to offer I'd be damned if I see UI like sci-fi movies. My 19inch LCD would look gorgeous then :-D

Ubuntu sucks. Had to reinstall 3 times in order to get it to work. One really quirky issue I noticed was that the install would crash if you try to install the OS in any other language but English while setting your location to US. Once I finally installed the OS, I found there is no way to change my screens resolution. I mean, there is a way, you have to modify X's config files by hand. You need to know your screens horizontal and vertical refresh rates ... That's Ubuntu 8.1 I'm talking about. Other Linux distros are a bit better. I think Fedora is the best. As far as Windows 7 goes, I'll put it on a virtual machine and check it out. I have not worked on Vista, and eventually I'll have to upgrade to 7, so I might as well give it a swirl...

We discussed it earlier the consensus seemed to be (as with Vista before it) that the people that had the least experience with it (indeed some had never even tried it) were the most willing to say the most negative things about it. :)

I've had a ton of experience with Vista and I have plenty of negative things to say about it. If it does what you want it to do that's great, but it doesn't do what I want it to and I've also had a lot of performance issues. It has admittedly gotten better, I've been using it since the final retail version came out and I stick by my opinion that what was originally released was pretty awful. What they have now is passable for most people, and I still use it for one of my boxes because I need experience with it in order to be able to support other users. Don't get me wrong there are some good features in Vista, they just aren't features I'm particularly interested in myself... I have high hopes that Windows 7 will be enough of an improvement for me to recommend it for more than just specialized cases (Gamers who want DX10, or Media Center users who want to take advantage of some of the advances there). I'm an MSDN subscriber so I have Windows 7 beta now, I just haven't had a chance to install it yet. I'll let you know my opinion when I do.
