What's everyone working on?

While reading John's diatribes I just realised I have no idea what anyone's working on anymore. We have John Simmons doing WxF, Rex is into secret societies and I haven't done VBScript in ages. It's crazy. So how about a quick update so I can catch up?

What a tush biter. I'm programming with an abacus and damn proud of it. It's all part of a "Chuck Norris Extreme Programming Week" that's being promoted at work. Well for me, at least.

Porting an old, undocumented and uncommented ASP3 app for an insurance company to ASP.net 3.5. Every chunk of code ported successfully sounds like a breathe of fresh air :)

A new release of our service management software (v5.0), right now I'm attempting to replicate the intricate code I originally wrote years ago to translate between sql code and the advanced filtering and sorting in the winform interface with the Infragistics grid to now also work in the asp.net interface with the Telerik grid which has no advanced filtering at all so I'm rolling my own. A lot of times ASP.NET stuff is like a black box and you have to throw ideas at it and see what comes out the other end, there's just no predicting what's going to happen across all browsers with 3rd party components. Reading through my fiery comments from years ago in the code I can relive all my original anger at the writers of the Infragistics grid control. :)

Unfortunately, most of the programming stuff has dried up do to excessively strict NIST FISMA crapola… most everyone is too afraid to invest resources into code writing. So I’m trying to adapt survey data with SAS and put it into a rather complex hard to setup open source web based data display tool. Too bad I don’t know SAS… I am so screwed, but learning it … slowly. Just received an assignment this morning to install a third party application that another contractor developed on my test network and see if it does any evil stuff (like phone home) and report back to boss. I’ve never done this stuff before, need to see what tools are available.

Replacing a 10yr old Access system with all latest and greatest MS technologies including ASP.NET MVC, WCF, LINQ, SQL, a .NET port of our desktop application, in an n-Tier architecture using DDD and TDD. All of which will soon be integrated with a Mas500 + SalesLogix combo of death. p.s. this is a Reboot[^] of a failed attempt at integrating a 3rd party ERP system which claimed to support SQL when in reality it was a Progress database living inside a SQL table. You can't make this $%^& up. Obviously IT wasn't involved in the selection process  Also nagging IT to get up to date with proper network and systems monitoring, a wiki and a ticketing system. nagios has stopped talking to MySQL so time to go troubleshoot that  I feel like I'm working at Toys'R'Us as a fun tester.

On a more serious note, still on VS2005 (C# & VB) with the odd dabble in '08. Today I am making several instances of the same process play nicely together across different sessions.

I am working on a Work Flow front-end in ASP.Net 3.5 with Telerik's AJAX controls that interfaces to the K2 BlackPearl Work Flow server. The program manages the process of an Abnormal Operating Events (I work for a pipeline company that is regulated by government). This Work Flow makes sure that nothing falls between the cracks and all the data is available to report to the government. I am also trying to get through testing of a Billing application that generates invoices. This piece of crap in is ASP.Net 1.1 and was written by people who had no idea what they were doing. The plan is for this application to go away in less than year when a new system is purchased.

Between projects at work at the moment. They have had a big restructure of the development teams. Last week I spent my team reading a manual on the new CMS system they've implemented. This week they want me to write add some JavaScript tracking code into our site. I'm sure I'll get some cutting edge exciting new project soon...
Words fade as the meanings change, but somehow, it don't bother me.

I've got something (that I find) interesting going: a set internal applications I've developed (using C# w/SQL Server) that we're using to print official ID cards for two major professional organizations in my state. After an ID card renewal cycle for these organizations, every member will be flashing cards printed by my application (this provides me a measure of geekly pride)! -Jay

Software to recreate 3D roads with multiple LOD's from OpenDRIVE, LandXML and various other data sources so they exactly match the engineering design (crossfall, super elevation etc.) Intersections are a pain! Also working on shaders for the various materials required - the semi-retroreflective road marking shader is proving to be a bit tricky. Cheers, Drew.
