But I may be able to write a general article or two on some of the less controversial areas when we're finished.

While reading John's diatribes I just realised I have no idea what anyone's working on anymore. We have John Simmons doing WxF, Rex is into secret societies and I haven't done VBScript in ages. It's crazy. So how about a quick update so I can catch up?

I'm working on testing an ass-load of app's against Microsoft's latest patch. After that, it's back to finishing up my pending application repackaging projects, then on to writing a couple of automation tools for my "process improvement" requirements.

Banging my head against a wall trying to update the macros for a whole ton of Word templates probably written before I even graduated college. I have to get the templates to search all of our Active Directory entries. This part is done, I just have to shoehorn it into all of the templates. FUN!!! Also working on writing my personal evaluation for my annual review. It's that time of the year again!!

Just finished a release candidate for a major release of one of our flagship products and have passed it to the QA team (all C++/MFC9). Now working on an update to my first cross-platform device monitoring app (C++/STL/Boost). I was promoted back in the summer and now have my own small team of devs (mix of C++/.NET skills) and we are about to embark on an app to stress test a major .NET app we have (the stress tester will be coded in C++ - not sure which UI lib to use yet - I am a fan of WTL but the new MFC UI stuff is hard to pass over). We all get the latest toys - VS2008, Visual Assist X, Visual Build Pro, Boost 1.37, etc. Yum. For the record, I really love my job - and having 'staff' just makes it more interesting. :)

Wouldn't you be worried of losing the ferret? Now that's an exception to handle!

Cross platform development with Qt, VTK, ITK and several other 500K+ line libraries. Way too much to learn. And VTK has poor documentation. There are 2 books that are well written but very incomplete and the generated documentation is not much more value than reading the header files. The download does have many examples though. But how much code can you read when you are behind time constraints?? BTW, all this is for a 3D medical imaging viewer with integrated cancer detection tools that we are developing in house. My duty is to put it all together and design the UI.

The company that I work at does a lot of custom software and I can't think of a single project that I've worked on that hasn't had some change in the business logic after we installed it. Of course it is a "bug" in their eyes even though we did what they told us to do, but it is no longer a frustrating thing. It is just something to deal with and somewhat expected.

Some people sail through life on a bed of roses like a knife slicing through butter.

While reading John's diatribes I just realised I have no idea what anyone's working on anymore. We have John Simmons doing WxF, Rex is into secret societies and I haven't done VBScript in ages. It's crazy. So how about a quick update so I can catch up?

                                        cheers, Chris Maunder

I'm part of an elite group in our government working to cover up the ensuing massive alien invasion of planet Earth. My most recent project involved my trying to get Windows Vista to install on their alien hardware, with the thought that it would most certainly slow them down. Unfortunately, I was only told far too late, that when they said "Alien" hardware, they really meant like, extraterrestrial stuff, and not Alienware. Sucks, all that work down the drain, but I did bring that machine to a grinding halt. So now I'm working on our "plan B", which primarily involves gathering together a group of unsuspecting individuals that will be drugged, loaded onto a spacecraft and blasted into space, while in suspended animation for the next 1000 years. We hope, after the eventual invasion and destruction of the human race, they will be able to make it back to Earth, and recolonize the planet. Which reminds me, Chris, I need your home address, so I can, uh, send you a package. I've already sent packages to a Professor John Robinson, Maureen, Judy, Penny, Will, Major Don West and Dr. Zachary Smith ... you're next on this list.
