What a tush biter. I'm programming with an abacus and damn proud of it. It's all part of a "Chuck Norris Extreme Programming Week" that's being promoted at work. Well for me, at least.

Step 1 of that practice is a swift round house kick to marketing so that feature requests are stopped in their tracks. Step 2 of that practice is to repeat Step 1 ad nauseum.

While reading John's diatribes I just realised I have no idea what anyone's working on anymore. We have John Simmons doing WxF, Rex is into secret societies and I haven't done VBScript in ages. It's crazy. So how about a quick update so I can catch up?

Cross platform development with Qt, VTK, ITK and several other 500K+ line libraries. Way too much to learn. And VTK has poor documentation. There are 2 books that are well written but very incomplete and the generated documentation is not much more value than reading the header files. The download does have many examples though. But how much code can you read when you are behind time constraints?? BTW, all this is for a 3D medical imaging viewer with integrated cancer detection tools that we are developing in house. My duty is to put it all together and design the UI.

Sometimes I wish that was as low as we went. I may have to work on another MS Access project in the near future. Luckily those tend to be rare. I've only had to do maintenance one in the many years that I've been here.

Ever changing user requirements from the "business planners" who don't understand SQL but still think my logic is wrong because I set up a comparison statement backwards from the STILL INCORRECT user requirements.

The company that I work at does a lot of custom software and I can't think of a single project that I've worked on that hasn't had some change in the business logic after we installed it. Of course it is a "bug" in their eyes even though we did what they told us to do, but it is no longer a frustrating thing. It is just something to deal with and somewhat expected.

I'm part of an elite group in our government working to cover up the ensuing massive alien invasion of planet Earth. My most recent project involved my trying to get Windows Vista to install on their alien hardware, with the thought that it would most certainly slow them down. Unfortunately, I was only told far too late, that when they said "Alien" hardware, they really meant like, extraterrestrial stuff, and not Alienware. Sucks, all that work down the drain, but I did bring that machine to a grinding halt. So now I'm working on our "plan B", which primarily involves gathering together a group of unsuspecting individuals that will be drugged, loaded onto a spacecraft and blasted into space, while in suspended animation for the next 1000 years. We hope, after the eventual invasion and destruction of the human race, they will be able to make it back to Earth, and recolonize the planet. Which reminds me, Chris, I need your home address, so I can, uh, send you a package. I've already sent packages to a Professor John Robinson, Maureen, Judy, Penny, Will, Major Don West and Dr. Zachary Smith ... you're next on this list.

Today we poured the concrete foundations for my first solo substation design. So far, so good. The anchor bolts are squared within 1/8" of nominal positions, corner to corner, and I spec'd the steel structural parts with 1/8" over-size mounting holes. I'll know whether I still have a job about a week after the steel arrives on or about the 25th of this month. I guess you could say I've been focusing on hardware lately... :-D

I've got something (that I find) interesting going: a set internal applications I've developed (using C# w/SQL Server) that we're using to print official ID cards for two major professional organizations in my state. After an ID card renewal cycle for these organizations, every member will be flashing cards printed by my application (this provides me a measure of geekly pride)! -Jay

My next attempt at world domination ( the fact I'm still trying tells you my past attempts have not been completely successful  ) Actually, I'm turning one of my articles from '05 into a product. Nick

                                      Isn't that backward?

Today we poured the concrete foundations for my first solo substation design. So far, so good. The anchor bolts are squared within 1/8" of nominal positions, corner to corner, and I spec'd the steel structural parts with 1/8" over-size mounting holes. I'll know whether I still have a job about a week after the steel arrives on or about the 25th of this month. I guess you could say I've been focusing on hardware lately... :-D

While reading John's diatribes I just realised I have no idea what anyone's working on anymore. We have John Simmons doing WxF, Rex is into secret societies and I haven't done VBScript in ages. It's crazy. So how about a quick update so I can catch up?

                                          cheers, Chris Maunder
