Where's the best place to direct people looking for .net developers interested in making small utility apps? Besides rent a coder of course, I've heard too many horror stories to be confident in making any suggestions.

In my case, Jordan is a small country, and it has an incredibly small market (even though its a relatively big outsource player) so more or less everyone knows everyone else. Word of mouth got me all of my work.

        Have you looked at Dice.com?

I don't need anything but our customers sometimes do and I want to send them to a respectable place or at least give them a good idea of how to find developers.

Looks like a recruitment site. The people I need to give a pointer to are interested only in small very short term stuff that isn't a job and doesn't require the developer to have more than experience, an email address and a bit of spare time. I was hoping for something like rent a coder but more respectable. :)

Too expensive unfortunately and not a good fit for this situation: I don't make any money off this, I'm just referring others and we're talking really small jobs here I don't know if people would be interested in paying 300 dollars to find a developer to do under a thousand dollars worth of work for them over a weekend or something.

Personally I wouldn't refer anyone who you wouldn't have working for you... as sure as eggs if it turns to crap, you will wear the blame for being the one that "referred that no-hoper to us". The bulk of my work has been word of mouth, referrals from other clients and one or two small jobs have been from my website.

:) Not exactly what I had in mind, these are business people I'm dealing with. I thought there would be a good place with a lot of out of work programmers or ones who wanted to make some money on the side but I guess the economy isn't bad enough yet. Maybe I'll just refer them to rent a coder after all and be done with it.

Yeah which is why I was looking for some kind of super site or something, not specifically referring any particular person but leaving it up to them. I don't want any involvement in this at all except answering questions for the developer on our api support forum specifically if they need help which, if they are experienced enough, they really shouldn't need much. Trouble is all the developers using our api now are either making commercial apps or doing in-house stuff. You're right though, you try to do a good deed for developers looking for a little money and sure as anything it will probably end up backfiring on me. Maybe just best to abandon the idea entirely.

I've been looking for the same thing, but the other way around. I've seen a couple of sites like rentacoder, but the bidding is too much work and the hourly rates are too low. I've had some luck doing work and telling the people to pay me if they think the work I did was decent. Right now I make a little extra money customizing software that I sell shrinkwrapped. It would be nice if I could find a way to build that up and stop my day job.

Given rentacoder's reputation, you might be burning your bridges with these folks if you recommend it.

From their FAQ: "The biggest category is web development, next is software development. " At least they understand that web development isn't software development. :-D

I've done some small coding projects threw Express personnel, they can usually find someone to do a task..and if they don't, they don't charge.. Speaking from experience, companies can contact them and say I need X, they will attempt to find someone who can accomplish X and then discuss with that person and the company(separately of course) what expectations are.. they can charge a flat rate or by the hour. Also if your company(s) are the types of places that may do this periodically every couple of months, the programmer may still be working with express personnel and they could get the same guy.. if they so chose.
