I bypassed Vista anticipating Windows 7 release
Your message interests me. I keep reading that W7 is only available for Vista users. So what did you upgrade from?

I downloaded the Beta and did a full install. Had XP Pro and it wiped out the XP MBR but I believe if I wanted to I could recover. You can get the Beta Here[^] The license is good until Aug. 1 of this year so I'm hoping if the real deal is not ready by then they will extend the Beta period for us that have adopted it. Mike

Hot damn! Finally. Windows 7 Tells You Why You Can't Touch That File[^] Seriously. I really, really want this feature built-in. :| No really. Stop looking at me like that. I'm not joking.
Everyone seems to be under the impression that the information is correct. What if the app, Songbird (as in the example) isn't running? What then? :)

I used to have crappy service and this would have taken me forever to download so I feel the pain. I can burn you a copy if you like? If your interested I'll give you my email and we can do it. 2.3 GB Mike

Quite a while ago I said that Windows 7 is what they wanted Vista to be but ran out of time.
It would be a real boon to Microsoft's PR if they offered free (or significantly discounted) upgrades from Vista to Windows 7.

The feature would be a thousand times as useful if it also had a "close file handle forcefully" button.

What's new about this? I get exactly the same message (well, minus the "Send feedback" link) in Vista. "Your File Is In Use… Demystified"[^]
In other words, it's reliant on applications telling Windows what files they have open. Probably the only change here is that all the in-box applications have been modified to do this.
