I have a Motorola Q Windows Mobile Device and the lack of consistency in the interface is so annoying that I just have to share. When the phone is locked I have to press the left soft-key once for the back-light and a second time to enable the unlock and then the * key to unlock. Not so bad. However, when the phone is locked pressing the left soft-key immediately goes into the recent programs menu and turns on the back-light. Requiring me to use the Home key to go back and see the time. The correct action here is the Home key to turn on the back-light (which will not work when the phone is locked). Long story short; to check the time on my phone there are two different key combinations to press depending on the state of the phone which cannot be determined until after you press the keys. Is it really so hard to attempt to use a product before you ship it?

I'm guessing that the programmer ported some code that was used on another phone, where this conflict did not exist. I find this kind of glitch very often when there's no coherent 10,00-ft. level guide for the UI. If you don't have a coherent viewpoint, that's when modal behavior kicks in.

Mobile phones are notorously bad examples of UI design. "Consistently crappy" seems to be the only successful goal. I always thought my old Siemens was "not so good". But now, "blessed" with a new Nokia, I am in rage and fits as soons as someone asks me about it.

What I don't understand is why my Nokia turns on the backlight as a result of the "low battery" warning. Even more infuriating is the "you have 15 seconds to terminate your call because the battery is dead" warning. And why the hell does it insist that I check my missed calls when I activate the phone? I hate cell phones

I have to accept the problems that exist with mobile phones, after all, if mobile phones didn't exist, I probably wouldn't have this job. (Note: I don't code mobile apps or the like, so don't vent at me :) )

My old Nokia 3120 was simply the best. It's such an *awesome* design, my new Nokia 5220 feels like a slight step backwards. I will always think of the 3120 as the pinnacle of cellphone design. There's something else to be said for Nokias - they are really sturdy. I know two people who dropped their phones on the road while riding motorbikes  and both phones are still working. Question for the purists: is it true that you drive cars, but ride bikes?

Consistency is over-rated. I try to avoid, for instance, web pages that all look alike within a site. It takes me a long time to write all those clear instructions for the user, and I find that being too consistent makes users take for granted that they can just wing it using the previous page as a guide. I intend them to read my prose, so I mix up styles willy-nilly, page to page, making it impossible to figure out what to do next without reading the full instructions. Cell phone companies have learned from my example, as well they should. Of course, they've improved on my customer service model; my websites include instructions, but their phones don't include manuals. That's slick, and my hat's off to the companies who figured out a way to not only make people read to use their products, but to also hunt for instructions on the web and pay for their printing. :-D

I too have a Motorola Q, but I don't have the same issues you're mentioning. What version of the Q do you have? What OS is it running? Mine is the Motorola Q 9H Global by AT&T and it's running WM6.1. To unlock mine all I have to do is press the left-soft key and then the asterick. The backlight automatically comes on. If I want to just check the time any key activates the screen and the backlight only comes on if the light sensor indicates it's needed. What I wish I could do is modify the "short-cuts" on the home screen. Mine uses the sliding panel interface and I really don't find some of the pre-defined shortcuts useful, but I don't want to change to the wm-standard interface for those hokey icons across the top of the screen.
