I hope that comes out okay, Colin. I had one of those done several years ago after an ECG showed some odd wiggles. It turns out I was taking in too much caffeine, which induced 'extra' minibeats in my cardiac rhythm .

Well, I'm already on ACE inhibitors (they reduce blood pressure).

I freak out anyone reading my ECG who isn't aware of my condition. My ECG trace is upside down compared to a normal person.

Glad I don't drive to work any more. I live 20 minute walk from my office and it is great. I pass under the M8 each day and I can see the traffic is always at a near stand still. The only time I ever really drive on the motorway any more is out of peak hours. I can make my flat to the edge of the city in 7 minutes. When I lived outside and drove into work it would take me 40 minutes to do the same distance.

So, I no longer work in a call centre. The intelligence of my colleagues has gone up. But they are not so outrageous. I used to work with a lesbian that had very active and open relationships. I learned more from over hearing her conversations than I ever did in sex education classes at school.

20 minute walk? That sounds crazy to me. I have about a 2 minute walk myself. Maybe I could handle yours, but this time of year I'd be a popsicle by the time I got there. It's nice not having to scrape my car off every morning though. Before I moved it was about a ten minute drive, but that's on country roads so 7 miles versus the block and a half now. At least that helps keep you fit.

All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; There is nothing new under the sun.

As a child, i loved to go walking through the woods around our farm. There was always something new, something interesting to grab my attention. The best places were where the tall trees had been cut out, the logs trimmed and dragged up trails cut into the hill. Brush and scrap covered the ground, better than any jungle-gym for climbing on and chasing through. Within a few years, new trees sprang up where old ones had formerly shaded the ground, mushrooms grew near stumps, and briars clogged the paths. Someday, i'll go back and fail to recognize anything. People change, come, and go. For better or worse, but always and without fail. And some of what arises in the place of what has departed is worth the loss. You speak well of my past contributions here; i'm flattered, but also humbled that you would consider my writing worth remembering, or my influence positive. Because in the time i've been here, i've engaged in all of the activities you describe, good and bad, and far more glib comments and shallow arguments than anything worth remembering. Indeed, it is concern over my tendency toward thoughtless arrogance and selfish manipulation that has caused me to step back of late, posting less and trying to put more thought into what i do post. Truth is, i'm sure i irritated some of the regulars when i first showed up. And i'm just as certain that some of the people i miss seeing around were already gone or going when you joined up. It's like... the circle of life or something... just a few less baboons threatening to drop lion cubs on your head. Don't look to the past. Don't worry about the present. Look to the future, post about your hopes and dreams, things you hope to do, foods you hope to eat... Consider that today, right now, there are people reading this thread that will be posting crap here tomorrow and brilliant essays a year from now, maybe inspired by your example. It's been a heavy week, micro

Beautiful post. If this were any example of what we could expect from you then I would say you were way to modest. Somehow I expect you put more thought into this one than most, but it at leasts provides a glimpse (to yourself as well as the rest of us) of what you are capable of. Judging from this alone you deserve the credit extended by code-frog (did I read Rex is his real name?).

I'm sorry, I understood almost none of that due to your revolting use of the English language. Please learn a language before you decide to slaughter it on an international stage. Oh, and maybe it might pay to share your deepest feelings with someone you know and trust - talk about 'real stuff' with real people (not that the people on the Internet aren't real, it's just that most of our communication is achieved through speech and body-language; words aren't always enough, and to beat my ol' war drum again, that's why your written word must be excellent - that way giving you the highest chance of being understood). As you said yourself, a half-decent slab of AI could reproduce this forum. I would think that by making that statement you invalidate your own purpose in being here or ranting in the first place. Appealing to a computer to share its knowledge and talk about won't get you very far. "That's the stuff that made us all closer." Although mateship and empathy for the losses of others is a noble trait, that's creepy Internet-stalker shit. I don't know who you are, you don't know who I am, our parents have never met nor have I or you been in the other's house - even a 4 year old could tell you that means you're a stranger. You don't share personal information with strangers! "I loved reading about Shogs trips through the mid-west to visit family." Again, others' stories can provide useful insight into unknown territories, but stories don't last forever. Why not go make some of your own? My point is that the world might as well be infinitely large when juxtaposed with the scope of an average human life. Go and explore some of that instead of sitting around the 'poisoned waterhole' drinking yourself to death and whining about it the whole fucking time! I hate it when people whine about their own predicament when they're the one best suited to changing it. P.S. I quite enjoy CodeProject, personally. P.P.S. This time, the OP did come off as a total dick P.P.P.S. Have a great day! :-D

That is more harsh than necessary. I saw the same flaws you did, and normally it bugs me when a comma is misplaced, let alone some of the rest of it, but you have to take the article as a whole. The post was easier to read than some highly regarded literature (poems, Shakespeare, even anything written before the reader's grandparents were born). And I'm not the first to say that there is nothing wrong with having electronic friendships (has the term e-friend been coined?). These days you have to communicate with people all over the world and an in-person meeting just may not be feasible. When you make friends here you gain a new resource to use for professional uses as well. You can draw on your friendships to seek guidance on the job front as well as when trying to solve business problems. Never underestimate the power a little likability can give you when searching for answers.

There is no reason you cannot make your own and share someone else's. After hearing of someone else's adventure it might give you new ideas for your own.

I did feel some of that same sentiment when I read the post myself. It does seem like Rex needs to do a bit more with his time than just sit around and watch CP's lounge, but when you love something (or at least the memory of it in this case) you want to be around it whenever you can.

For those of you thinking I've lost it. Nope. This place is just boring. I'm going to shake it up. It's so predictable I can tell you with near certainty what 50% of tomorrows post will be. Nobody here really cares. They close the browser and leave. So why not shake it up and stir the pot... I don't know... why not? I've finally come to see this playground for what it is. What it is is hilarious. Guys like Jim Crafton, Juan Ramos, Colin, Vector, Ray, Gary, Trollslayer, Mustafa, Dan, Mike and the rest. You know you are. I don't have to list you but you know who you are. You guys are real. You talk, to don't complain incessantly about the people who read your articles and their dumb questions. You post real stuff. You talk about your life the parts of your life that you value. You share stories that tell us about you as a person, thinker and human being. You share humor. You share pain. You share loss. You share what keeps life real. Even John Simmons is starting to actually develop educated well-formed thoughts about how managers and companies are screwing up stuff with Dilbert-like ignorance. That's the stuff that's real. You guys that cast the votes and make these glib and ignorant comments without even asking a question to inquirer what the OP meant are what is making this place hard to stomach at times. You are supposed to smart, educated, patient engineers and scientists. You are not supposed to missile-lock on one view but you should be open to them all. You don't have to agree but if you don't agree... show your education by at least adding more than 1 sentence to your low vote. NO! The votes don't bother me. They really don't. What gets me is that you have allowed yourself to become a spectator in life and you have forgotten you are a participant. Sometimes people share things that mean something to them. Sometimes they are celebrating something of historical importance or personal significance. Don't just blow it away with a low vote because you are too lazy to understand that even though their view is not your view they chose to share it with you. It's that they wanted to be right. It's not they needed a trail of red replies making them legends in their own minds at all. Instead, people share things here so you can get to know them. You can learn about them. You can celebrate with them. Your can artfully and articulately disagree with them. But all too often what I see here now is that people don't read something gain an appreciation for the OP they read something to come to one of 3 c

Yup. My building has room for ~250-300 8x10' cubes. It's a 2 story square, entrance in aside, my cube in a back corner. That's 2-3m, with about the same to walk from the door to the back of the parking lot (I need the exercise).

I can't believe you, you ignorant son of a ... no, wait, I agree completely. :-) Well said. I'm fairly new to the area and don't post a lot except when I think I'll add some value. I've never given anyone a vote, so I guess I've already been taking your dare. It's nice to see you care. To offer my opinion, I suspect that there are several reasons people are not as social any more. First, and this one is personal, I think CP is viewed more as a place to get the information we need and get the heck out. I work way too much and when I'm not working I have plenty to divide my attention amongst. Years ago when I was a student and had all the time in the world (and fewer other options for my time) I would spend hours in programming chat rooms (Yahoo!) and I still remember the regs and still talk with some of the people I met there. It was fun asking and answering questions. Ok, so that was reason one, not enough time for everything. Number two is that there are places dedicated specifically to socializing, so why mix business with pleasure. I'm talking about My Space and Face Book and whatever other wannabes are out there. I don't have an account on any of them, but I suspect they have drawn quite a few would-be socialites from our midst. And finally I think it's a self-compounding problem. The more legacy members (like many of the ones you mentioned) we lose, the more we lose the original feel of the place and the less new members see what the old-timers (used quite endearingly) envisioned and the less personal it gets. The more examples of what you want to see, the more you'll see, so keep posting what you value and see where it goes. Ok, so maybe my several was only a few, but I have to get to work before someone realizes I'm enjoying myself. :-) There's my two cents, although you probably got ripped off.

I am still around!! It's true that I have not come here as often as I did before, but every now and then I still answer a quetion or two in the C# forum. Part of the reason I haven't come here so much lately is what you describe. The discussions have not been as good as they used to be, and many of the people I knew also don't come (or post) as often. But another reason is that I've had so much work that I really haven't had the time to spend on CP. I come here and read almost every day, but I post less often. One of my new year's resolutions was to be more of a regular here -- CP is my home on the web and I really would like to be here every day, but sometimes there's work to do :)

Sure. I understand. It's just that precise means exactly and about means close to so the combination was amusing. No harm done, just thought it was funny.

I guess I've become a boring nonentity since I stopped my diatribes aginst inanities.:~ Oh well. Anyway, I suspect I've dropped off the radar because I've been spending less and less time here in the Lounge. I answer some questions in the forums, and have discussions in a group called the WPF Disciples where a bunch of people have impassioned discussions about software architecture - it may be boring to most, but the fire and passion there is inspiring.

And who would make up the peer group? I don't ask this because I'm an MVP, but because I am wary about the elitism and clanishness that could result.
