In these times of hardship and rising unemployment, its heartening to see that there is always money to burn on research that reaches obvious conclusions. Scientists tell us that women are better at spotting a cute baby than men. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7842007.stm[^] Next they plan to research if women are more naturally more adept at having babies than men.

Words fade as the meanings change, but somehow, it don't bother me.

Actually, I think their standards are less stringent then men.

I think you should do some research on this. Also correlate breast size to the babeitude rating that male spotters use.

Until I had children of my own I honestly never found any babies cute. They just looked like babies. Mewling pink sacks of responsibility. I could never understand my wife and other women cooing over friends' and family's new offspring. One of them would say 'isn't he/she cute?', and I would just smile and nod, while thinking 'not especially'. It seemed obvious that women were born hardwired to find babies cute. After having kids my perceptions changed and I do find some babies cute.

I will use the Helen Scale. Assuming Helen of Troy had a face that launched a thousand ships, then a face that would launch one would be a milihelen.

I will require some hands on experience and may take on an apprentice. Anyone want a job?

That's easy, it follows a normal distribution. Too small or too large has limited appeal. It has to be just right. However, taste and texture do come into play, and there are other correlating factors, such as symmetry and accessibility.

You need a muse, not an apprentice.

My only problem with that is that we don't know what Helen looked like. So what are comparing this too? I propose taking a short poll to determine a modern day Helen, and I nominate Salma Hayak, Halle Berry and Monica Bellucci. Sure, I'll volunteer.

Minogue? She's okay. More sexy than beautiful. Don't know Kelly Brook, but she's okay too. Yes to 7 of 9. Denise Richards is hot, but not cute.

They look like a bad cross between yoda and gremlins; wtf is cute about a parasite that screams, vomits and defecates in equal measure. Only someone with a pronounced mothering instinct could possibly find such a thing in the least bit cute.

I assume you don't have kids? The best feeling in the world is putting your newborn child on your chest and watching them sleep. As the song says: You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life, the facts of life. P.S. - As punishment for not liking babies, I hope this song stays in your head for a while. ;P

No research is ever pointless as long as it's done by accepted scientific methods and published somewhere for everyone to benefit. There is a prevailing feeling out there these days that research has to be FOR some purpose or DO something but the great majority of the really beneficial things we take for granted didn't come from trying to make that thing, they came from pure research that led to discoveries that led to more that ultimately resulted in the thing we've come to know and enjoy and can't live without.

I assume you don't have kids? The best feeling in the world is putting your newborn child on your chest and watching them sleep. As the song says: You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life, the facts of life. P.S. - As punishment for not liking babies, I hope this song stays in your head for a while. ;P

I can't see where you'd have got such an idea from ;-) The thought of even holding a baby makes me cringe. I guess I have too much on my plate managing my own chaotic lifestyle let alone having the added resposibility of a helpless child.

My only problem with that is that we don't know what Helen looked like. So what are comparing this too? I propose taking a short poll to determine a modern day Helen, and I nominate Salma Hayak, Halle Berry and Monica Bellucci. Sure, I'll volunteer.
