Considering their stock price is dropping, perhaps right now it isn't.

Yeah, I know but the timing is funny and the math almost adds up in a very cynical way. Of course, now I have to compete with people who have Microsoft on their resumes for contracts. It was bad enough competing with the will work for free crowd.

First, Microsoft is going to cut 5,000 jobs over 18 months. Many of those will be through natural attrition and others will largely be in unprofitable divisions. Second, Bill Gates doesn't work for Microsoft and that money came from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. It's intended to help fight polio.

I thought we beat that years ago. Besides, developers don't need their legs. :-D

I got laughed at by the owner of a consulting company in Phoenix once. He had way too much work, him and his staff were pulling in over 90 hours a week and just couldn't keep up with the demand. Long story short, he charges his customers about $20 an hour and wanted to pay me $15; he laughed when I told him what I charged and replied with a sly comment, "No wonder your looking for work". That said I keep looking in that market I think it would be a nice play to try for a few months. Then again I have a goal of working in all 50 States. I don't know how that is going to happen. BTW, good luck with your search.

I don't think you will get that to run. Besides, if I had no legs, how would I pedal the generator for my PC.

I doubt contractors would be in the figures, they (probably) work for someone else and therefore not MS.

BizSquawkYou would be correct. The 5000 figure refers to full time employees. 1400 were laid off as of today, with the rest expected to be laid off over the next 18 months. Most of the positions were in support roles, including some IT people. This will be partially mitigated, apparently, because they will be hiring within other roles. Expected net job loss in 18 months is expected to be 2000-2500. There will also be reduction in contract and vendor positions. Apparently, the expected reduction is approximately 15% of the corporate budget for those positions. Speculation is a total of anywhere from 2000 to 6000 contract positions will be lost, either through attrition (non-renewal of contracts, no backfill of previous contract positions when they become open, etc), or outright immediate termination of contracts.

It will be interesting to see how many of the 5000 are developers. I somehow think that many of them will be in supporting roles.

From the press release: "The layoffs, starting with 1,400 on Thursday, will affect workers in research and development, marketing, sales, finance, legal and corporate affairs, human resources and information technology, and mostly in Redmond, Wash., where the company is based. The cuts are expected to touch virtually every division and include the computer programmers who write code for existing and future applications." FWIW the divisions listed don't sound like many actual developers.

Outsource. Or attach bicycle generators to the wheels of a wheelchair and have someone (with an MBA?) push you around all day.

Except with all due respect to the folks who lost their jobs, MS should have done this a while ago. It's entirely realistic that they should probably drop another 8-10k jobs to be honest. Starting with old Stevie B and Ray "Blotus Goates" Ozzie. They are too big, they're doing way too many things, and they've lost a lot of focus.

Well, that's probably because they called SetFocus in a KillFocus handler.
