Delphi

From my perspective on the outside looking in, it seems that Delphi was an excellent product owned, unfortunatly, by what has become one of the most disfunctional companies in our biz. Borland was awesome in the early days under Phillipe Khan but after his reign they've become a herd of sheep that really can't seem to find their posterior with both hands and a flashlight. Where's a border collie when you need one?

Probably you are more than right... I did not know why it did not worked, but at least it seemed a very good product to me...

Well, you've been around the business long enough to know that it's not the best quality product, but rather the best marketing machine, that wins. Were it otherwise, I most likely would have chosen the Unix path long ago.

A friend told me that years ago he interviewed at one of the product groups at Borland. This particular group wasn't in the main Borland building - they were running out of room, and so moved this group to another building. The offices this group was in happened to be right next to a women's gym. The manager who interviewed my friend had nice big windows, that faced the entrance to the women's gym. My friend told me that to this day he cannot remember what the manager looked like. (He didn't get the job.) :)
Best wishes, Hans

It is dreadful isn't it? They are slower than the Mono mob at implementing .NET Framework changes. For a commercial organization, that beggars belief.

I've long believed that I could boost both the productivy and profits of any major company by walking in and firing the middle third of management. Now if I could just get them to pay me for that...

Pascal and C++ share a lot of similar concepts. I have always thought that the C++ syntax is cleaner than Pascal, but then again I have always hated Pascal. So no, I don't think there will be any problems.
Best wishes, Hans

As I ObjectPascal fan, I'd have to quarrel with you there. If by "cleaner" you mean fewer characters, then yeah, but in terms of clarity, I find, personally, that I much prefer ObjectPascal to C++ syntax. Note I'm referring to the variant of Pascal that's used in Delphi, not the older versions of the language.

Anyone with any Delphi experience? I have none. Would a good Delphi programmer have any problems switching to C++?
Apathy Rules - I suppose...
Its not the things you fear that come to get you but all the things that you don't expect
Back in late 1999 I had the same problem. Learning C++ wasn't too bad. Switching from the productive Delphi IDE and VCL framework to VC6 and MFC was brutal though and for months I was pulling my hair out.

I started with C++, moved to Delphi /ver. 5 and 6 / for a several years and from more then 5 years I’m back in C++ universe with some small deviations in Java and C#(that’s how they call Delphi these days). So regarding my experience you will have no problems moving from Object Pascal to C++. Moving from BCL to .Net is even easier. My advice is if you have a choice go for C# instead of C++. If you like Object Pascal you will feel very comfortable with it. The fact that the two languages are created from same person /several good words for MS here/ is very noticeable.

Delphi is a excellent language. It's bad that got a lot of company-change lately (Borland - Inprise - Borland again - CodeGear - Embarcadero). But IMHO it's the best choice to Win32 development. Anything that you want do with C++ on Win32 you can do in Delphi.
