I dunno, village life just gets you a little down some times :) I've stayed over at a friends flat in the Ghetto of Kensington (normally quite a posh part for those who aren't familiar with the village), and I swear we saw a bullet hole outside his front door one morning. Anyway, I've always been fairly lucky and have never had any problems when I've been in London. Of course, I walk fairly quickly through Kings Cross at certain times of night :) -- Paul "I need the secure packaging of Jockeys. Oh to be working in London, I could do a 20 minute commute instead of an hour and 20 mins :) Still, there's always after graduation and I would've missed working with such a cool bunch of people as I do now. -- Paul "I need the secure packaging of Jockeys. Liz Hurley: "saying the US was less dangerous." the sad fact is that London has a higher crime rate than NY. (You are just 5 times more likely to get murdered in NY though) At least crime is on the way down (ish) in NY. Crime (especially violent crime) has skyrocketed in the UK. London just seems to attract the worst criminals. "I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered" George Best.

I have seen cops walking around with guns, its just not as common I think. I think all have them stowed away in the cars, but then I don't know whether every cop having a pistol to hand would cut crime. I have a feeling that there are too many kids getting away with it, and in my opinion any youth found mugging, stealing etc. should have a damn stiff sentance. Just my opinion. -- Paul "I need the secure packaging of Jockeys. My boys need a house!" - Kramer, in "The Chinese Woman" episode of Seinfeld MS Messenger: paul@oobaloo.co.uk Sonork: 100.22446

I think Paul and Colin have summed it up, though I must reiterate what Paul briefly mentioned - a lot of the crime is committed by those known as untouchables. No I am not talking Indian social standards here but rather the new generations of kids that have been appearing in high crime areas since the 70's who know more about criminal law than the state lawyers who try them. These people have their own lawyers and know how to get themselves back on the streets and commiting crime within hours of being arrested - with no charge. This is where the system needs a serious overhaul. A mental assesment should be fairly good at determining if a person is likely to recommit, and if so they should be given the "three strikes and you're out" treatment. Hell there are plenty of uncivilised pacific islands out there to become the next Austrailia. You think I'm kidding?

What all these article about London vs NY fail to mention is that NY has 7(?) 8(?) million living veritcally in a 7x3 mile island, and London has (NY - 1) million living in (a conservative estimate) 10 x 10 miles. Considerably easier to police :) The police need to be able to do the same here as in NY. When people can urinate in the street within shouting distance of Trafalgar Square, and nothing is done, its not surprising people get away with worse things in london. As usual, Tony Blair's pathetically feeble government can't/won't do anything for fear of offending people, i.e. the minority that now get to smoke cannabis almost legally. It's a joke. I commute into London every day, and fortunately can use the train/tube to get all the way to my office door without having to experience the 'everyday' London that everyone seems to want to visit. Goodness knows why, it's unclean and unfriendly. I don't blame Joan Collins. :( For all you CP-ers that want to visit England, spend a day in London then go visit somewhere like Manchester or Newcastle, where you'll have a much friendlier and pleasant time. And for all you Englanders reading this, I'm a southerner, and I really don't like London. Maybe I'm just a bit jaded having experienced some of London's crime at first hand (fortunately at 6ft tall, I didn't come off worst that time ;) ). I'm only in it for the money ;) and the ludicrous house prices :) B.

You've just been reported to Her Majesty's Immigration Department. :-D Though if you are looking for pointers I hear anywhere within the M5 boudary is a good place to start, followed up by inner city Birmin'ham or Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds - heck anywhere near the Scotts, the Welsh or the French is always a high crime area. ;P

If things are as bad as they can be, you can be sure there'll be a brighter tomarrow.

What all these article about London vs NY fail to mention is that NY has 7(?) 8(?) million living veritcally in a 7x3 mile island, and London has (NY - 1) million living in (a conservative estimate) 10 x 10 miles. Don't kid yourself, the minority (especially for my current generation) smoke it for recreation at least twice a month. Okay that may not be much, but it is being used. I can walk into a certain unamed local shop and buy it over the counter from a local woman who doubles up in Safeways during the morning shift. Cannabis is harmless in 99.999% of its uses, and it may come as a surprise to some people to know that it has a huge "safety first" following, at elast round here, and does not lead on to any other drgus - even tobaco smoking. I have a motto - don't diss something till you've tried it... :suss: Anyway, where in the south is your castle? It is obviously somewhere near to London, but I assume you live in a nice community?
