The myriad options for Windows 7[^] Who, in the name of all that is holy, would want Starter? Or even the second crippled option... I'm gonna ride XP till it drops. As soon as some genius finds a way to run Visual Studio and all my games on Linux, Ubuntu here I come. [edit] OK, it is a repost. Note to self, read, then post. [/edit]

The only purpose I could see for the starter version would be for young school children VERY cheap if not free. I didn't see a price on it so maybe that's the plan. Who knows? It doesn't really matter how many versions they offer, in most cases you only need one. I too was going to ride XP to the bitter end but decided to try the new Windows 7 and love it. Windows 7 Ultimate - what, pray tell, does 'limited availability' mean? Will it be a numbered, limited edition - "only 1500 licenses available world-wide!!!" And the prices - I can get Apple's OS, home apps and office suite together[^] for less than they're suggesting for Windows 7 Home Basic. Offset the higher hardware costs in a couple of OS releases :-)

just don't see what it contributed. I say use what ever is going to work best for the situation without sacrificing to any OS religion.

Starter is a half baked attempt to offer a very cheap version to compete against Warezdoze in the developing world without having to deal with people importing a heavily discounted 3rd world version of a normal version back into the US/EU/etc. Dunno about it being available "world wide" unless they're planning to offer it to compete in the netbook race to the bottom unless end gadget switched the starter/basic availability info (swapped matches the vista options). That's also where I'd think starter would fit logically as well.

I didn't see anything about OS religion. The point is that Windows is expensive. Of course you could argue that Apple's hardware cost premium more than offsets the savings.

I will stick with XP Pro until Windows 8 is announced, then maybe migrate to 7! (Should have sorted all the 7 probs by then! :-D )

I'm not exactly sure what sort of 'windows work' you do and this question might therefore be irrelevant but would the majority of your users moving to vista/7 have a bearing on the length of time that turns out to be, or will your work allow you to continue with XP even after that happens. For myself, I have tried the 7 Beta and quite like it, but finances preclude my moving for at least two years or so.

Me too, but then, I like Vista. It has a 'restart network card', and 'Ad-Hoc wireless network', sadly missing in XP, not to mention the system disk mirror, and effective restore points. If I hadn't drank about thirteen beers, I'd still be up telling you why Vista is actually cool. :suss:

There's an article a well known CPian wrote on running an app as a service (of course, I can't remember his name right now and I'm too lazy to google). I wonder if that "3 concurrent app" limitation in W7 Starter can be overcome by running apps as services, hehe. Marc

                                    Windows 7 Starter
Available worldwide to OEMs on new PCs
                                    Missing Aero UI tweaks
                                    Limited to 3 simultaneous applications

Why would anybody pay for a computer that allows them to only run 3 apps at once? I can't imagine the sales pitch for this one.

I didn't see anything about OS religion. The point is that Windows is expensive. Of course you could argue that Apple's hardware cost premium more than offsets the savings.

Very few people buy windows. It is included in the cost of the pc. I'm sure MS is not getting retail for that copy of Windows when you purchase a new PC.

I didn't get any requirements for the signature
