Yup, it's anti-trust time again and guess who's in the frame this time? There are no prizes for guessing Microsoft, however what specific charges the European Commission are bringing against Microsoft in relation to IE remain something of a mystery. "Although the commission has not revealed the specific charges or said what it would want Microsoft to do to correct the situation, it has given some clues about the latter. They could include forcing Microsoft to "give users an objective opportunity to choose which competing Web browser(s) instead of, or in addition to, Internet Explorer they wanted to install in Windows," said commission spokesman Jonathan Todd in an e-mail." Article[^] Isn't this actually included in Windows anyway? I can go to www.firefox.com, www.opera.com, www.safari.com, www.google.com/chrome and www.younameit.org and download any browser I want - isn't that clearly an objective opportunity? Anyway.... mumble, mumble, mumble, bureaucracy gone mad, mumble, mumble, unelected hypocrites, mumble, mumble, waste of bloody money, mumble, mumble, should have let bloody Napoleon win, mumble, mumble... mumble.

'Ere, you're 'aving a giraffe, ain't you? That site don't do browsers! I think what the EU want is for Microsoft to supply Windows without a browser. Then, when you first start it, you can go and download the one you want, instead of using the default Internet Explorer. Of course, exactly how you easily download a competing browser without a browser installed could prove tricky.

Would have been much better indeed. You would drive at the right side of the road, measure everything in decimal and metric, and have a stable currency. And very likely would use strange words such as ordinateur and logiciel. :-D

Heh... Downloaded FF via the command-line FTP client just last week, after a neighbor managed to get IE-disabling malware installed on his machine. :)

Let's be honest. IE is used as much as it is becuase it comes with Windows. That's the only reason. It's easy for us (technical folk) to claim it takes nothing to install something else (we have). But it is not so "evident" for the average user. Antoher issue is whether or not the EU bureaucrats have the right to take on monopolies... as the US has and whether or not this is just another case of EU bashing.

One thing you can be certain of in life along with death and taxes is that people always get exactly the government they deserve in a democracy.

It clearly has nothing to do with the stated issues at all and everything to do with extortion and being seen to be doing something. I'm sure it plays well to their constituents so it's a no lose proposition for them. Don't blame them, blame their constituents.

Yes, lets: this is extortion by the EU plain and simple and has nothing at all to do with technical issues. In addition we're talking about prosecuting anti competitiveness in a market where NO ONE CHARGES FOR THE PRODUCT. Think about that for a second then get back to me about honest and monopolies and EU bashing. I don't blame the EU any more than I blame any elected official for taking kickbacks or bribes, I blame the electorate, the EU isn't a dictatorship last time I looked.

This would be so user friendly...

Anyway.... mumble, mumble, mumble, bureaucracy gone mad, mumble, mumble, unelected hypocrites, mumble, mumble, waste of bloody money, mumble, mumble, should have let bloody Napoleon win, mumble, mumble... mumble.

Sure you can, but, you know, first, you can't get Windows without IE, and second, sure you can install FireFox anytime, but without Microsoft bowing down and saying "Great EU Comission! Without you, we would be evil Capitalists destroying the world! Bless you for allowing us to sell our indulgences!" Nonwithstanding any mass market PC OS without a built-in web browser would be woth no more than a giggle.

The EU won't be happy until MS ships a box of 1's and 0's with a note "Assemble these any damn way you wish"

Which in turn will lead to the next EU v MS lawsuit when it fails to work because FF changes its download URL and someone uses a DVD with the old one embedded or the proxy MS uses to avoid the moving target issue has its server rebooted. Personally. I'm waiting for the EU to sue MS because no one except EUcrats is buying the current N(o WMP) version of Windows.

Of course that ignores the fact opinion that bundling IE with Windows is what caused Netscape to make Navigator free... :-\ In all seriousness, though. It does seem silly that Microsoft is being taken to task for doing something that every Linux distribution does (usually ships with Firefox) and no one bats an eyelash at it. For that matter, does Mac OS X ship with any other browser aside from Safari? Should the EU sue Apple as well?* Flynn *The answer is "of course not - Apple doesn't make enough money" ;P
